North American Asian Elephant Population 2025

Looks like Brazos and Travis are beginning to share the same space! I believe this isn't their first "playdate" but hopefully a step towards Bluebonnet being reintegrated with her mother and sister.
Fort Worth Zoo
This is really, really good news! It's important that both bulls get the opportunity to socialise with one another - it's essential for their social development, and both bulls are now at the stage where this is more so what they would be engaging in, especially for Travis now that he's becoming more independent.

I too hope this is a step forward towards having Rasha back with both her daughters, but unless Angel and Rasha manage to get along well together in a larger herd setting, I don't see how they make it work unless Angel is transferred to another facility (like Tulsa).

To preface, Bluebonnet gets on just fine with Rasha and Belle, always had, the issue is purely Rasha and Angel (as mentioned). Since the two aren’t compatible, Fort Worth opted to split Bluebonnet from Rasha since BB *is* socially compatible with Angel.

Truthfully this is a decision that has always baffled me, subjectively it would make much more sense to send angel out elsewhere and simply maintain the matriarchal herd intact, as opposed to having worry about maintaining this non-breeding cow who will never be able to be integrated to the main herd and shuffling around animals to and from the main herd.

I second this thought since Angel had many chances in her reproductive years to breed, but never succeeded, so why keep her? She was brought to Fort Worth in 1999 when she was still only 11 initially to breed with Groucho, then a few years later, Casey, but both bulls failed to impregnate her. As a last resort, the zoo attempted AI on her around the time Bonnie got pregnant with Bowie in 2011 and that sadly didn't work out as well, which ended Angel's hopes of a matriline. However, she is a calf of Vance (Sunny at Columbus is a half-sister through her mother as well), so I can say Angel wasn't really too valuable of a breeding cow to the population anyways, so it would have totally made sense to send her off a decade ago rather than splitting up Bonnie and Rasha.

A really long time ago, there was an Asian elephant kept at a place called Hollywild, in South Carolina. Sadly, it is no longer alive. Were there any other South Carolina facilities known to have had Asian elephants?

In 1940, a farmer named Matthew Ferguson of Camden purchased a female Asian elephant named Alice from Clyde Beatty's Jungle Zoo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When he departed for training with the National Guard, he moved her to the Grant Park Zoo in Atlanta, Georgia, with the intention of her returning after his training (she did not).

In 1954, WUSN-TV Channel 2 owner Drayton Hastie purchased a young female Indian elephant from an importer as a mascot for his Charlestown, South Carolina, station. She was sold to an amusement park in the 1962.

Numerous circuses with Asian elephants made winterquarters in South Carolina like the Fogg, Quick and Mead menagerie in 1826, Dales Bros. in Union 1948-1949 and Bob Stevens' Bailey Bros. Circus in Newburry of the late 1940s and 1950s. There are likely more I didn't see in the quick search of my records.

In the mid-1960s, Allen Schaeffer imported a year-old female Asian elephant from Vietnam for his tourist attraction South of the Border in Dillon, South Carolina. She was named for and a mascot for Republican presidential candidate Barry Goldwater.

David Meeks' Donna was the longest Asian elephant resident of South Carolina, arriving in the mid-1970s until her passing in 2006 at the age of 48.

Regarding South Carolina's two major zoos in Greenville and Columbia, only the Greenville Zoo had an Asian elephant Joy (1971-1976), purchased from Boston's Franklin Park Zoo.

Are there any bull Asian Elephants in the population that have a real, legitimate possibility of being exported to Europe sometime in the next few years?
I very much doubt it. Europe has more bulls than they know what to do with. A large percentage of the young bulls in the population right now are related to the European population anyway and would be of little value over there. If anything, they'd want to be exporting their bulls to the US.

Possibly some of the bachelors at Denver (excluding Billy as he himself is a European import), Samudrua, Doc Samson Albert Chuck or Tucker would be realistic choices. I think it's easier to import a younger bull overseas.

Also, @Nile Hippo Expert this topic is probably better for the speculation thread. This is a news thread for crying out loud! Lol
Not really lecturing or scolding you, but I just thought I'd point that out.

None of the bulls you listed would be realistic choices. Doc is in his 20s and would be difficult to fly. Samson, Albert, Samudra and Tucker have numerous relatives in Europe via Calvin and Nikolai respectively... Chuck is already stationed at a breeding facility to be their breeding bull for likely several years, and already is decently well represented via his father in the US as well.

Yeah i agree w ya. i think it would be a bit pointless to export much of the bulls in the NA population. Europe already has a bucket load of competent bulls, and importing one could potentially mean a downgrade to the amount of dexterous breeders America currently possesses, essential for the zoo population in the latter country to keep growing.

Also mentioned in the video, Frankie and Phoebe have begun to be reintegrated into the group! It looks like they're responding well, respecting Sunny and on their way to being a full herd here soon! Phoebe appears to be due within the next month or so, last in-person update I heard was end of October but of course could be earlier or later.
I'm super biased (Hence the username), but it is really touching to watch Frankie interact with such a little baby after not having a peer calf in his younger years!

I am seeing a happy and functional herd at Columbus Zoo now I could see the video on the computer.

I was worried that Phoebe would try to kidnap the calf as I believe this calf is the first one she would have seen in a long time, at least, that was not hers. I did notice Phoebe moving so slow, so soon there will be another one!

Phoebe is a very socially mature animal. She is absolutely the dominant individual in the situation but not to a degree where she would try and take the calf. She's had many interactions with Sunny's baby from shortly after birth and been very respectful of Sunny, baby and Rudy.
She is absolutely getting close to her own birth too. I saw her in-person on Saturday and she looks noticeably bigger and slower for sure. Fingers crossed a heathy calf drops soon!
