I wonder if they already made it a policy not to name any animals Jack.
I have my fingers crossed that-that's the case!

wort a tongue in the cheek u acknowledge you there. I believe that people respect him for the publicity to the Columbus zoo. But choose to forget the scandal.
it appears Jack is the most popular name on the zoo’s Facebook page.
I've seen several Franks,
Seriously? When the older brother of this calf is already named Frankie?
I don't see why this would be a policy. The zoo has openly expressed support of Jack Hannah even after the scandal, providing updates on his condition and even encouraging people to send his family letters. They have far from seperated themselves from him, and I doubt they will after his impact on the zoo.I wonder if they already made it a policy not to name any animals Jack. I saw on the Facebook thread that someone wanted to name the calf Buckeye but there is a bear already called Buckeye.
I do not think any keeper at the zoo would pick Jack if they have personal knowledge of went on. After all the scandal is fairly recent so it is not forgotten.
These are obviously joke comments. I mean, there are many weirdos out there on social media, many people (particularly teenage boys but not limited to them) post something silly like this just for the sake of trying to go viral it is kind of annoying.Seriously? A majority of the "Frank" comments are suggesting the name due to Phoebe from Friends having a baby named Frank. There have been a number of Chandler and Joey suggestions as well due to the same show. Some people don't research the relatives of an animal before suggesting a name. These are obviously joke comments. I made sure it is a masculine name. It means full of compassion, mercy and being kind and generous in the Indian language. As we all know elephants represent a certain role in the Indian culture and since our country is in uncertain times and I felt we needed a reminder that we need to be kind and compassionate to ourselves and others.
No wonder they're giving the keepers a week to look through them all!Columbus zoo announced they had over 10,000 name suggestions for the new calf.
I bet 9.999 names are Jack.
Honestly, I'd hope not! There's so many better, unique names they could go with.I'd love to hear how many "Jack" suggestions were given if it is indeed picked as one of the top four.
I do agree. As much as I do enjoy the Halloween touch Jack has, it's just such a basic name for an animal so significant to the population. I'd be a touch surprised if the keepers chose something of Asian origin since none of the other elephants do (minus Sunny, but no one actually calls her by her full name lol), but I certianly wouldn't be upset by it!Honestly, I'd hope not! While not of Asian origin, I loved the choices of Bodhi and Beco for their first two elephant calves, they certainly feel like they have that unique touch in elephant names rather than than Ellie or Rita or Frankie which are all kinda lame. Jack seems just as lazy AF and I wouldn't be shocked if it gets 95% of the vote if it's in the competition, I'm hoping it is not chosen as one of the four names.I do agree. I'm assuming there's also a fair portion of people who've chosen Jack in honor of Jack Hanna. If Columbus really wanted to honor him via naming an elephant calf after him, I'd hope they would do it loosely; ie. if another female calf is born, they could go with Jacky, or even better, Hannah.I do agree. Bodhi is a name of Asian origin. Beco is a combination of his parents, Phoebe and Coco (which is a trend I've seen a lot with captive animals). And the last three have all been named after donors/long time supporters of the zoo, or by suggestions provided by them. While not of Asian origin, I loved the choices of Bodhi and Beco for their first two elephant calves, they certainly feel like they have that unique touch in elephant names rather than than Ellie or Rita or Frankie
Ironically enough, Columbus did a similar contest when Beco was named where guests submitted names and then the top four names were chosen, three of which were of Asian origin! The options were Beco, Damai, Siddhartha and Sattva. Many people complained about the choices!Bodhi is a name of Asian origin. While definitely unfortunate to hear about Trong Nhi, it is amazing to see breeding out of National after so many years!! A new breeding cow in the population is also something to celebrate!National Zoo - First time mother, 13 year old Nhi Linh is pregnant and due around February of next year!
Spike is the sire of this calf, which is great news considering he has no surviving offspring and is the only surviving descendant of his wild born parents.
Nhi Linh's mother, Trong Nhi, also conceived - however it's sadly believed she's lost her calf.
