Reba was a "behaviorally-challenged" elephant but found a loving home in Phoenix where she has been an ambassador for her species. Phoenix has been home to three agressive girls for years and I was fortunate to see just how wonderful this staff is from the inside. My condolences go out to all who loved her, but special commendation should go to this staff and this zoo for making her a wonderful home.

I just saw this YouTube video of Oregan's bull Samudra. He's old enough to have been one of the potential sired of Chendra's baby, and he's grown to look like a very stunning young bull! With just a hint of Rose-Tu's thinner face, he really resembles his handsome late dad Tusko! His sister Lily sadly died of EEHV, but Sam has another sister out there, half-sister Natasha at ALS. If she's any indication, Sam could be a very big boy! And look at his confidence in approaching the pool while the elder Samson lays back and watches. What a great young bull!

Shanti gave birth to a bull in Houston! But after birth, he was bleeding from his abdomen and they had to operate on him. Fortunately, everything went smoothly and they saved his life. Big congratulations.

Shanti, the Smithsonian National Zoo's 45 year old elephant cow, has been euthanized.

I like it because it is being mentioned. Sometimes, there is people that don't care or that don't even post this type of news. I also feel very sad for the loss of Shanti and I liked your post to thank you for honoring and mentioning the loss of this wonderful Asian Elephant.

Why doesn't Zoochat have a dislike button for unfortunate news like this?
I wonder if he'll grow bigger than Tusko. He does look like Rose-Tu and if he takes more after her he might get as heavy but not as tall. I recently saw a vid of Bodhi at Denver Zoo and he looks like he'll outgrow his late dad Coco. He's already as tall as Groucho!

That's great news. I wished it was a bull. Finally, visitors will have the opportunity to observe a growing bull. But they should also take care of breeding their young cows. (Maliha, Jade, Priya).

I mourn with the zoo. They did their best to save it.
Probably the worst bit? The animal rights twits at IDA and the like will be up in arms about this. The're gonna put St. Louis on the worst list, insulting the keeps and vets who worked hard to save it, all in vein.

If it would've been born in a "sanctuary" it would've magically gotten over any problems it may have had. Obviously. 
According to several anti-zoo people, it seems that sanctuaries are better for the animals, despite many of them have smaller enclosures and generate less income than AZA facilities.

Deepest condolences for the Saint Louis Zoo and its Elephant Team. The keepers and veterinarians undoubtedly did everything they could to improve Avi's condition. Even though the decision to euthanize Avi was a hard one, it was ultimately the right one.

Endangered Ark Foundation in OK had a male calf born on Sunday, August 2, 2020 to Whimpy. Sire is Tommy. Was announced on Facebook page.
