North American Asian Elephant Reproduction

Are suspicions were correct the African lion safari does indeed have two brand new calves they look to be a least a few days old as they are far to small to Lily's youngest daughter Imke. Emily has a calf hopefully another daughter, along with another calf whos mother I couldn't figure out it was either Natasha or her daughter Opal.

I'm sure ALS will make an announcement about the calves sooner or later and we will find out. Maybe they are waiting for the third calf to be born to make an combined announcement for all the calves as I'm quite sure they will be welcoming another calf in the very near future.

You know that I find very ironic is that 6 years ago the African lion safari announced the the births of three healthy female calves born to mothers Natasha, Opal, and Emily, flash forward six years later and once again the African lion safari has two calves born to Emily, and another calf whos is either Nat or Opal and one on the way, when the other is born the African lion will have one of the largest herds in captivity numbering 21 strong over three generations. And I am hoping for the safari park to bring in a new male as Johnsons eldest daughters are now reaching sexual maturity.

Johnson's eldest daughter Nellie is only 7 and will turn 8 later this year so they still have atleast another year or two to bring in a new breeding bull. Nevertheless, I hope it happens soon because then there is a possibility that Johnson may come down into the US just like his predecessor Rex did. And, personally I would love to see Johnson go to St. Louis (since Maliha, Jade, and even Priya need to breed ASAP) or any other zoo in the US in need of a breeding bull for that matter.

In the best interest of the current US Asian Elephant population, Johnson should either send to the White Oak Conservation Center so he can breed with Asha and April. Or he should be sent to the Denver Zoo as his genetics are very common. Johnson himself has sired 8 caves. His father 1.0 Calvin (Bandara x Kamala) 1986-06-11 is also the father of Samson, Albert, George, and Kandula in the US as well as 8 other elephants in Europe. 0.1 Kitty 1962-00-00, Johnson’s mother, has also had 3 other calves. Three other calves does not sound like a lot but her first son, Nikolai, has sired 18 elephant calves in Europe! Samson, Johnson’s full bother has had 3 calves and Emily, Johnson’s half-sister, has had one calf. In total, Johnson is related to 20 other elephants in North America as well as 32 in Europe. As you can see Johnson’s blood line is very over represented in both the AZA and the EAZA.

Emily is Johnson’s half-sister. As Johnson is the current breeding bull at African Lion Safari, if Emily were to have a calf it would be with him which would be inbreeding. The only other option would be George who has not sired a calf yet and is part of the Motek x Warda line as well as the Calivin blood line. The best option for Emily is to bring in another bull for her to mate with.

I believe George is castrated so he isn’t an option for breeding. Hopefully they AI’d Emily, it would be unfortunate if her calf is inbred.

Actually their are multiplie examples of females mating at even younger ages then Johnsons eldest daughters example Cinta, Lilly and her full sister Wered were mated at the age of 3 and gave birth at the age of 5, while Farina and her half sister Califa where mated at the age of 5 and gave to their first calves at the ages of 7 and 8.

Their are rumors that Gigi Emily's daughter was actually sired by George

If they did AI her the most likely candidate for the father of her new calf would either be George or his half bother through his mothers side Bodhi who actually sired a calf a few months ago with a female (Tupelo) at the Huston zoo and their is a small possibility that Sneezy, and Groucho sired her calf

Yes it is definitely possible that Nellie could breed now but what I was saying is that she doesn’t have to for atleast a couple more years.

George is not castrated so he is fully capable of breeding but he seems to be a behavioral non breeder.
Are you sure? Because many people (on the North American Asian Elephant Population thread) have stated that he is. On top of that, he is managed in free contact which is something they wouldn't do with an intact bull.

I am almost 100% certain you are correct. George is to my knowledge at least castrated which is why he is managed free-contact. It would be arguably unsafe to manage him otherwise.

I am completely sure that he is not castrated. Bulls can be trained to adapt to free contact like George but it is very risky for the keepers. Where did you get the information that he is castrated? I got the information that he is not castrated from The elephant database.

Elephant database has quite a few errors and is often not completly up to date so I wouldn't completely trust it. For example: it doesn't state that Hank is the father of Phoebe's calf, or that Bodhi is Winnie's sire, and oddly Rose from ALS doesn't even have a profile on the database, and much more. And, like I said if you go through the North American Asian Elephant Population thread many people have stated that on there.

I was wrong about George being not being castrated. He is indeed chemically castrated. Before he was castrated, semen was collected from him for AI usage. So far it has not been used but it is suspected that Gigi is his daughter.

Is the bull George or Johnson?

The babies are tiny!
