North American Asian Elephant Reproduction

Maybe one of them already is pregnant and they are saying this to make it a “surprise.” I doubt it though, we can only hope they decide to breed the girls soon.
This definitely makes sense, not so much to keep it a surprise but to keep information out of the public's hands until it's less of a risk to share it. I have heard staff from other zoos particularly committed to nontransparency say "They're still young :)" or "They're not pregnant, we hope they will be in the future though! :)" when asked about confirmed pregnancies, or about the breeding status of animals who are very well within the reproductive age range for their species.

Columbus Zoo Elephant Program Update
The zoo currently has no plans to breed Sunny and Rudy because they want to wait until they are older. It sounds like the zoo will bring in a new bull when they are ready to breed rather than using Hank or Beco.

Is this because they lost their accreditation? If they’re not even gonna breed them they shouldn’t even be there. I’ve honestly never liked Columbus that much (probably gonna get hate for saying that but that’s just my honest opinion). And why can’t they just artificially inseminate Rudy and Sunny like they did with Phoebe?

Or move them to White Oak Conservation to live with their herd their, which include their half sisters

The loss of accreditation will be only a temporary setback. I bet they will have it back within a year or two.

zoos may be non profit but they have to be run like a business. Some customers would want to see some kind of certification.
And Columbus Zoo is a big ticket item so why would AZA permanently ban them?

Maybe for these reasons? And their last new exhibit Adventure Cove turned out to be horrendous. Really can’t say I’m their biggest supporter. There was problems with their lions inbreeding with one another in 2019. Not related to this current thread I know so if the moderators need to remove it to another thread or delete it understand.

The lion cubs were clearly an accident, the male was vasectomized at the time of their conception. It wasn't in any way planned for or predicted and was never repeated afterwards. I don't see cause for repercussions there when the zoo took the appropriate steps to prevent it from happening in the first place.

The zoo has also removed and replaced the previous administration involved with the infractions and has done a thorough review into the sourcing of their ambassador animals, to ensure that ethical choices are made going forward.

The mistakes made by the previous administration were serious but the zoo has responded to them appropriately and thoroughly and resolved all issues. Not hate at all (regarding your previous message), just in all fairness if they meet accreditation standards at this point then there's no valid reason to withhold it from them going forward, that would be an injustice in itself.

Unrelated but what was awful about Adventure Cove? It looked really good in the concepts! What a shame if it's experienced any problems afterwards (also I apologize for the very lengthy post unrelated to this thread...)

Largely people don't like the concept, but some of the enclosures are much smaller than they should be.

Is it generally tradition to announce an elephant is pregnant only a few months before the due date?

Is it generally tradition to announce an elephant is pregnant only a few months before the due date?

In most zoos around the world, yes. It's mainly to allow time for the calf to be ensured healthy during the vital, early stages of pregnancy.

In Australia, they usually announce the births at the six month pregnancy mark, which can be an entire 15-16 months before the calf is born. This is to build up popularity of the imminent birth, especially as Australia has only had eleven successful elephant calves born in the countries history, all of which have been in the last twelve years.

In 2022 four calves were born including one set of twins

0.1 Rama (Rex x Asha) was born at the Oklahoma City Zoo on January 20th, 2022

0.1 Tikka (Casey x Aree) was born at White Oak on June 14th, 2022

1.0 Yaad (Doc x Mali) was born at Rosamond Gifford Zoo on October 24th, 2022

1.0 Tukada (Doc x Mali) was born at Rosamond Gifford Zoo on October 24th, 2022

And in 2021 one more calf was born at the White Oak Conservation center 0.1 Tikka to Casey and Aree born on June 14th, 2022.
