North American AZA Generic Giraffe Population

1.0 Fitz (whose full name is apparently Fitzniklas) has been transferred from the Memphis Zoo to the Peoria Zoo.

Young giraffe from Memphis finds new home in Peoria Zoo

As @King of Komodo Dragons reported on the San Antonio Zoo News thread, (2.0.) Alan and Cosmo will be leaving the zoo for an undisclosed location this Friday. The Zoo additionally notes that they will be receiving more giraffes in the near future, presumably to breed as they recently received a young female.

My guess would be that Alan and Cosmo are leaving the SSP because 'technically' they aren't supposed to breed given their pedigree isn't 100% known, but it does make me wonder why they retained Brayden as he is neutered.

I've got a Couple of Questions:

1. Why are Some Zoos still keeping Generic Giraffes over Masai Giraffes like most zoos?

2. Are there any Purebreds left?

1. Why are Some Zoos still keeping Generic Giraffes over Masai Giraffes like most zoos?

Readily available and not enough Masai to go around.

Masai, yes, there are multiple hundred in the AZA,

Multiple hundred? There's approximately 140 Masai currently...

but Reticulated, no, not since about 50 years ago.

Pretty sure there were some creeping past 2000 if my recollection serves me correctly, but not many.

What are the European Zoos doing about it?

Europe maintains multiple pure subspecies SSP's, although due to import restrictions there is little exchange (if any) between the two continents.
