North American AZA Generic Giraffe Population

2.0 giraffes Moyo (Mo) and Daniel have moved to the Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park, which will open in 2027, from Reid Park Zoo and The Living Desert respectively.

Meet Mo and Daniel, the first-ever giraffes to make a home at Saint Louis Zoo WildCare Park — our new safari park and conservation center opening in 2027! These young, reticulated giraffes made the trip this month from Reid Park Zoo in Tucson, Arizona and The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens in California and are settling in well to WildCare Park's new giraffe barn. In the months ahead, they’ll be joined by more giraffe friends and will start to explore the park's 101-acre Savanna Safari pasture. Guests will be able to see many as 10 to15 giraffes roaming alongside zebra, antelope and other species on guided safari tours when the park opens in 2027. We can't wait for you to see it!"
 
 
0.1 generic giraffe "Sue Ellen" has died aged 25 at the Hattiesburg Zoo.
Hattiesburg Zoo on Instagram: "The Hattiesburg Zoo is heartbroken to share the passing of its beloved Reticulated Giraffe, Sue Ellen, who passed away on Monday, November 17th. At 25 years old, she enjoyed a long, full life. The average life expectancy of a giraffe in a zoo is 25–26 years, while in the wild it is 17–20 years. Sue Ellen had been experiencing age-related osteoarthritis for about a year, and the Zoo shared her condition with the public in mid-October 2025. Throughout her symptoms, her animal care and veterinary teams worked tirelessly to ease her pain through medications, joint supplements, hydrotherapy, and softer habitat substrates. “Our team worked together to relieve Sue Ellen’s joint pain through a multitude of treatments to ensure that she was as comfortable as possible, but despite our best efforts we continued to see a decline in her health,” said Dr. Julia MacGregor, Zoo Veterinarian. After extensive discussions and careful consideration, the teams made the difficult decision to say goodbye through humane euthanasia. Sue Ellen was surrounded by her keepers and those who cared for her. Assisting Dr. MacGregor were Dr. Kanyon McLean and staff from Global Wildlife Center, and Dr. Kaylin McNulty and pathology residents from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Sue Ellen had a special love for children, often approaching the feeding platform even on days she didn’t feel her best. As one of the Zoo’s first two giraffes, arriving in May 2021, she will be deeply missed and will hold a special place in the hearts of all who visited her. The Hattiesburg Zoo staff knows Sue Ellen has been part of so many guests’ memories and mourns this loss with them. “We thank our guests for their support and compassion as our teams grieve the passing of this beloved member of the Hattiesburg Zoo family,” said Kristen Moore, Director of Wildlife. Daily giraffe feedings may operate differently over the next week or two as Alberta (Bertie) and Grace adjust to the loss of their herd mate. “We do not know if they will be standoffish while they grieve,” said Moore. “We will need to be patient and give them time to settle into their new normal.”"
 
 
0.1 "Mi-Na" is moving from Tulsa Zoo to an unspecified AZA zoo.

Mi-Na, our 2-year-old female giraffe, will soon be relocating to another AZA-accredited zoo as part of the Giraffe AZA Species Survival Plan®. The SSP® helps ensure genetically healthy, sustainable populations of giraffes in human care. Mi-Na’s move is an important part of this collaborative effort and supports long-term conservation for her species. Mi-Na has been a special part of our herd. From sharing her birth with the world to seeing her inquisitive personality shine over the past two years or becoming a big sister to our youngest giraffe, Jasiri, seeing her grow has been a true highlight for our staff. A male generic giraffe calf named Rahisi was born on November 17th at the Memphis Zoo. He is the twelfth calf for dad Niklas, and the second calf for mom Maliki.
Memphis Zoo on Instagram: "We have an exciting announcement! Everyone, meet “Rahisi” (pronounced ruh-hee-see). He was born on Monday, November 17, and weighed 127 pounds. This is dad “Niklas”’s twelfth calf and mom “Maliki”’s second. Rahisi means “easy” in Swahili. Maliki’s birth of “Kamari” was challenging due to an abnormal breech position, and our incredible giraffe team and veterinary staff were able to assist during that process. This time, however, Maliki labored and delivered Rahisi all by herself, and our giraffe team is exceptionally proud of her. Our team was also able to quickly complete a neonatal exam on the new baby, as seen in this video, and he’s been doing great! Keepers have described Rahisi as a very curious calf who has been exploring the barn. Happy zoomies have been alternating with restful naps, with Maliki keeping a watchful eye. Rahisi is ready to meet all of you! He’ll be on exhibit for the first time tomorrow morning (Saturday), weather dependent.
