Zoo Knoxville is opening their new white rhino habitat (former elephant exhibit) on Memorial Day weekend. It looks like they are specifically advertising with ‘a group of rhinos’ any ideas who it is that could be moving or has already moved there?

Knoxville exhibit while not as large as Nashville nice to see them repurposing it for a crash of wide rhino

The Zoo Granby announced the arrival of Hazina and Alice, both four-year-olds from the San Diego Zoo and Safari Park. They arrived at the Zoo Granby on April 17. They are recommended to breed with the male rhino, KC. They are already viewable to the public. This is so exciting since the Zoo Granby can now participate in the breeding program. Hope there will be rhino babies in the future.

I visited Zoo Knoxville today and could see 2 rhinos behind the black mesh blocking off the exhibit! I spoke with a keeper and they said it is 2.0 Mylo and Ranger from DAK. They also said they are expecting another 1.3 rhinos in the next few weeks! It looks like the new yard will have two separate paddocks one for a bachelor group and one for a breeding group.

I, personally, find it interesting that Knoxville will be dedicated to both a breeding and bachelor crash simultaneously. How will the new facility be able to handle six rhinos (based on what I’m reading) at once will be up for discussion when a formal announcement is made.

While we still have to wait until the remaining rhinos make a formal arrival to Zoo Knoxville. At the very least, we should now know the number of white rhinos remaining at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, following the departures of (1.0) Mylo and (1.0) Ranger respectively:

Disney's Animal Kingdom - 0.5.0 (5)
• 0.1 Kendi (03/23/99) Samson x Edith
• 0.1 Jao (1996) WILD x WILD
• 0.1 Lola (01/17/10) Spike x Kendi
• 0.1 Kiama (02/19/15) Frankie x Kendi
• 0.1 Logan (11/02/21) Dugan x Lola

What the plan is for DAK is not yet quite clear. Unfortunately, their breeding bull Dugan - who had recently come in - died quite unexpectedly in July 2023. Dugan was actually born and bred at Knoxville ... I really do not know why he was not already replaced ... it is almost now close on 2 years with nothingness.

If u read the post above, there are two paddocks (one for the breeding herd and one for the bachelor group).

Perhaps DAK was waiting to offload the younger males first, before acquiring a new bull.

I think it’s possible that there are actually two new rhinos in Omaha and that Mashile has already left. One of the new ones could in fact even be Chopper!
Does anyone know the current population at Omaha? I know there was anticipated movement, but have never seen any official announcement and did not see an updated population list on this forum for a bit. Thanks!

The Henry Doorly Zoo should have at least a male called Newton. As you probably know the zoo has not had much luck and the breeding group never took off. One of the 2 females white rhino residing here passed away in 2019. It was planned to exchange the remaining female and bring in a new female rhino from up country. I do not know if this move back and forth has actually taken place. Perhaps someone local can help out!
