North American Common Hippopotamus Population

This information does not need to be noted here, because the name of an individual hippo is irrelevant to the status and sustainability of the nationwide common hippo population. Please keep these discussions in the Cincinnati Zoo News thread.

I disagree slightly.

Maybe mentioning voting for the name does not need to be noted; but once the male is named, I think it deserves a mention in this thread.

A lot of people (like myself), like to keep up to date with the population via this thread, so mentioning the decided name for this new calf, is relevant, especially as we only have a selective few hippo calves born every year.

The vote does not need to be mentioned. Once a name is decided then certainly, it's an important part of the thread. Anything re voting is unnecessary.

I would like to suggest that Cincinnati male Tucker only be listed by the name Tucker. He was never officially "Brian Wilson" or "Bruce", both used as public names.in San Francisco. Never used by Keepers or in Studbook. Tucker is the only he has ever had.

Yes, we do refer to him as Tucker anyways. ;)

Topeka Zoo male Vison is Tucker x Mara

Is Frankie (1975 - Blackie x Red) from Wild Wilderness Drive-Through Safari, which closed in March, still alive? I have not heard of anything related to his new location or if he has since died.

Thanks. Just an FYI incase something was missed.

Thank you! I appreciate it. I don't know how to edit the original post, so I just update them and repost them occasionally :p I try to do it at the beginning of the new year, at least.

You've asked this already. It seems he may have died; we would've had some sort of news if he was transferred.

I think only mods can do that. ;)

He could have also moved to a private owner, but I think that it's most likely that he died sometime earlier this year.

He would be 47 this year. He was alive as of last year; there's video footage of him online, so if he has died it would've been sometime late last year/earlier this year.

You can’t update them and the mods don’t edit this sort of thing. I requested an autocorrect of Brunus to Brutus be corrected and this was never done. To be clear - this is a statement, not a criticism as I respect the mods have more important things to do than fix trivial spelling errors.

I too am the author of several population threads and if there’s a sufficient number of edits needed (births, deaths etc). then I do so in the first week of January. I’m sure everyone can live with that. :p

Another possibility is that Frankie might be still alive and cared for at WWDTS, due to the fact that he is 47 years old, and might be too old to get transferred. However, I am sure that he is unable to be seen by the public. That is exactly what happened to his dad, Blackie, during his geriatric years. When the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo's Pachyderm Building closed in September 2008, staff decided that Blackie was too old (55 years old) to get moved to another facility, so they built Blackie an off-exhibit "Retirement Condo" in the zoo's giraffe barn, where he lived until his death at age 60(61?) in January 2014.

How are you "sure" of this?
