North American Jaguar population

Zoo adventures

Well-Known Member
I created this population list for the jaguars. This population list records all births, deaths, and transfers of all jaguars kept in North America. I will post an updated list each year in this same thread. The total population of NA is 99.84.3 individuals, with 7 holders in Canada, 64 holders in the United States of America, and 31 holders in Mexico. The Canadian population is 8.7 individuals. The USA population is 63.50 individuals. The Mexican population is 28.27.3 individuals. These numbers are approximate. It is organized by country and by alphabetical order. I intentionally left out Myrtle Beach Safari and ZWF Miami.
I tried my best to compile the information for the Mexican institutions, but I could not cover all of them. There are 3 facilities in Mexico that I am not sure if they still have jaguars: Bosque y Zoológico de la Ciudad, Parque Zoológico Animaya, and Parque Del Pueblo Zoológico. Any help would be appreciated to make my list more accurate.

Very good list, but one minor error is that the Fitz you have listed at the Woodland Park Zoo is the wrong Fitz. Fitz who currently lives at Woodland Park was born on July 20, 2017 at the Houston Zoo (parents Tesoro x Maya). His twin sister Emma, now at Oakland Zoo, should also have that birthdate (you listed her date of birth birth as June 20, 2017).

Parque del Pueblo no longer has Jaguar. Animaya should recieve jaguar this year for a new exhibit. Where is Zoologico de la Ciudad ? Chapultepec zoo had a adult male melanistic jaguar when I visited late last year. Chilpancingo zoo near Acapulco also has jaguars.

Thank you for this information. Zoologico de la Ciudad is mentioned in the paragraph. I am not sure if they still have jaguars.
The male melanistic jaguar at Chapultepec Zoo should be the father of the 3 cubs.
I will search more about Chilpancingo Zoo in the future.

Opps I made a mistake. Thanks for telling me about Fitz.

which will certainly bring fresh blood into the current population as we know it.

I get your point, but it's a bit overhyped wording when both Khan and Lua were born in the NA population and neither is the only cub from their respective parents. The Jaguar SSP continues to receive regular influx of new genetics and imports are currently underway unless something has changed.

Looking back @Great Argus, I’ll admit that I did let my excitement for this announcement go over my head. It’s just that I was thrilled that the Brevard Zoo is attempting to revive their jaguar breeding program, and that the transfer of the Jacksonville-born Khan to a Florida zoo made me feel ecstatic about the whole subject.

I was also under the impression that Lua and Khan’s gene’s were not well-represented in the current population, so that too played a part in how my previous post came about.

Both yes and no. In this case neither has previously bred, so any cub is indeed good for the population. However both have siblings - Khan's half brother Harry (Jacksonville) has already fathered a cub, and recently (Banks, at Cameron Park). Lua is full sibling to Estrela (LA), Zia (OKC), and Zooka (Palm Beach); though none have bred three are paired, with OKC unfortunately loosing their male in May breaking a pair. Given the relative lack of cubs within the AZA the last several years despite numerous pairings and breeding recommendations, I'm also not very inclined to put my hopes too high at the moment.

Amarillo Zoo: 1.0 individuals
1.0 Bagheera(Melanistic) (UNK x UNK) 9-year-old
He was born Jun 28 2014 at Montgomery Zoo to Kai & Nakita. He was originally named Flinn. He & his sister Sara (Serafina) were gifted to Bearizona when they were about 6 months old. He was renamed Bagheera in a naming contest. Then in 2018, he was traded to Rosamond for Nacho & Libre. When Rosamond closed in 2023, Amarillo received him.
