North American Koala Population

Any idea what caused her death ? So sad to hear this....She was the 19th koala born at Cleveland Metroparks Zoo..

I didn't ask the keeper for a specific cause of death, but she mentioned that Maya had been battling unspecified health issues for awhile. Her son is still in Los Angeles.

Maya the female koala at the Los Angeles Zoo sadly passed away sometime last month. Her passing is noted in the monthly Animal Transactions report linked in the LA Zoo news thread. I also confirmed the sad news with a keeper during my visit today.
That is so sad that Maya the koala passed away. I saw Maya and her joey last year in May while he was still small and they were both so adorable. I guess that means that there are just two males left at the L.A. Zoo now. I would love to see the zoo refocus on koala breeding and start using the old Koala House (now the Australia House) for its original purpose. When I was a kid in the '80s, the koalas were a major attraction at the zoo and now they are hardly ever on exhibit when I go to their habitat. I've only seen them twice in the past two years and I visit frequently.

You are correct that L.A. has two males left. Chip should be in the exhibit where you would've seen him with Maya. Burra, his father, is in the exhibit with the kangaroos (he was moved over there when Chip was separated from Maya), often under the covered area where there's a heat lamp but other times I've seen him outside of there napping on a branch or eating.

I'm happy for Louisville and it's on my list to visit this summer so perhaps I'll see the koala.. interesting to note there is no end date to their arrival so they may be there a while. Seeing another zoo surprise us with two SD koalas definitely makes Brookfield's delay feel worse though!

Mentioned by @ZooGirlSD, there are two new Koala joeys at the San Diego Zoo! Adori has a female joey that has been making consistent appearances outside the pouch and Merindah also has a joey in pouch that has just started peeking its head out and sex has not yet been confirmed.

The zoo has since sexed and named (what I assume) Merindah's joey as a (1.0) named Bunji.

It's officially joey season and some baby koalas are slowly emerging from the coziness of their mamas' pouches to explore with the rest of the colony including little Bunji, the newest member of the gang and named in partnership with @tarongazoo. This little backpack baby has attached himself to mom's side and will remain close until he's around one-year-old. #koala #joeys #pouchpotatoes #sandiegozoo | San Diego Zoo
