Hopefully Nan’s incredibly valuable genes will finally get passed down to some grandcubs.Called it! I wish they had sent her to Detroit though, Nuka isn't related to her and is a proven breeding male now.

This is absolute bureacratic mumbo jumbo ... AND ... it is counter productive to either in situ and ex situ conservation of this essentially very endangered species!!!Our zoos our trying... unfortunately any bears originating from the wild cannot be bred. It's wrecking our genetic diversity and our breeding program.
That would really help our population, maybe that'll be an option at some point.

BTW: I am familiar with the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
Well ... it was for a long time. And quite frankly ... ATM the situation with polar bears and genetics in US/Canadian zoos remains pretty "screwed up" ...This is a moot point nowadays considering this rule has since been repealed.
