North American Polar Bear Population 2022

Does anyone here know if Haley or Talini were ever on birth control? Cranbeary and Hayley lived at Memphis at the same time and Cranbeary was definitely on birth control at some point (though not necessarily in Memphis). Talini and Hayley shouldn’t have been, but it could explain their lack of reproduction.

Does anyone know of Nuka left Detroit because they now have 3 females, 2 of which will be in prime breeding in 2 years time or so? They definitely have the space to hold three females and a male, they or Columbus probably have the biggest polar bear exhibits in the United States. Really impressive facility and if they could have 3 breeding females with a male that would be insane for the population and the Detroit Zoo.

Nuka is the father of the two cubs, so having him breed with them is out of the question.

Neva and Nikita have been officially introduced. This pair has a lot of potential it seems.
Hopefully Neva being a young female of five years should give them a good chance across several years if the first couple of seasons are unsuccessful.
It's unfortunate that the population's two newest breeding pairs are both uncle-niece pairs (Nikita/Neva and Hudson/Hope). But inbred polar bear cubs are better than no polar bear cubs. I'm also interested to see where Nuka was sent, hopefully with tomorrow being International Polar Bear Day, we'll get an announcement tomorrow. Fingers crossed 2022 won't be as disappointing as 2021 in terms of births!

Looking at the population list, I see both Nikita and Neva are from well represented lines but it is what it is and I agree it’s better to have inbred Polar bears than accept phase outs.

Shockingly, Lee is still in Louisville despite it being peak breeding season shortly. I think it’s unlikely he’s moving at this point. He’d still need a month of quarantine and by then it would be April. It looks like either Columbus or Toledo will be out of a male this season.

Factoring in the additional time needed for introductions, I’d agree it’s unlikely he’ll be transferred for this breeding season.

Does anyone know if he and Qannik are allowed to breed now? That’s the only logical reason I see for keeping him. He’s very valuable and one of two proven males in the population, add on top that Columbus and Toledo are so close compared to the moves we’ve seen from Maryland, Utah, Illinois, and Oregon. I’m still shocked that none of the four recently mature females joined him: Amelia Grey, Nora, Neva, and Hope are great matches.

As a wild born female, Qannik is prohibited from breeding as far as I’m aware. A ridiculous rule when it would greatly enhance the genetics of the captive population.

It’s an absolutely infuriating rule to say the least. And I’m honestly shocked that Lee, Aroura, Anana, Crystal, Amelia and Nora are not in good breeding situations. The SSP has done so much work recently that it’s disappointing that Lee’s wasting away with who knows how much time left and three proven females are left without a definite mate. Plus the Buffalo situation is infuriating, they and Lincoln Park need to do a male swap like everyone else is trying. If only Marty was still alive, some of these problems could be solved.

It is not just infuriating, it is incomprehensible, senseless and absolutely insane piece of legislation.

For the love of conserving a species these legislative lapses are actually promoting quite the opposite. It really ought to be challenged in the courts for actually condemning a rescuee animal to a life of functional extinction in captivity. That is a legal injustice as the animal / individual in question is disallowed ever from ever exhibiting its complete compartment of natural behaviors and/or for animal welfare and reproductive health reasons be allowed to reproduce and contribute to the perpetuation of the species.

Makes absolutely no sense...although the rule is likely in place to prevent further capturing of Polar Bears from the wild for breeding purposes, which is still absolutely nonsense.

The rule is totally illogical as if we’re able to breed from these bears and increase the captive population, there’d be less desire to obtain wild bears. Not that the zoos are out there netting up Polar bear cubs like the animal traders were back in the day.

The only shred of logic I can find in this rule is probably by coincidence rather than design, but when zoos take in wild Polar bears, they’re often orphaned cubs/adolescents that are fossicking food around human settlements - i.e. nuisance bears wildlife services are happy to offload on a zoo. The less captive breeding, the more places they’ll be for these problem bears.
