North American Population Lists

Are there any lists you guys would like to see? I'm in the mood to make new ones.

I've basically given up on the Chimpanzee, Gibbon, and Spotted Hyena lists. There are just too many facilities that house them.

I'd be interested in making lists for Bush Dogs, Giant Anteaters and/or Fossa, but I'd like to hear what you guys want to see. (I don't really want to do cats, so please do not suggest them.)

I suppose, I won’t mind seeing a population list for the Giant Anteater, Aardvark, Siamang, Komodo Dragon, and the Fossa as well. If that is of course, alright with you @EsserWarrior.

Siamangs were included with the large Gibbon list that I tried to construct. I would possibly make them their own list.

Aardvark would be interesting.. I didn't even think about them. Komodo Dragon may be hard to do.

What North American zoos still have Asiatic Black Bears in their collection? I know that you recently updated your lists of Andean, sloth, polar and sun bears, but how about Asiatic? That should be a very short list. :)

Ungulate species in general, but especially antelope and cervid species (I love pudu). I just came from the AZA Ungulates Updates thread and it's so sad to see so many species that we may no longer see in American zoos within our lifetimes. (seriously, why aren't we embracing red-fronted gazelles? They do fine in pairs and cold climate, and dama and rhim gazelles also do fine solo.)

Ungulates can be difficult because they do not often get recognized as individuals in zoos. I thought about doing Pudu, but I am not sure. They're not as common as have a unique appearance so it may be easier.

There's way to many individuals to keep track of.

This is a fact.

Lists are nearly impossible to construct unless the population is almost entirely exclusive to AZA facilities or is extremely small. The species also has to be relevant enough to get attention from the media - which basically means that mammals are about all you can do.

I've tried to construct a list of chimpanzees, spotted hyenas, and all gibbons. All of which have been scrapped. I may try to complete them at some point, but it won't be for a while.

Some suggestions I have are giant anteaters, red pandas, binturongs, and Amur tigers
There are far too many individual Binturongs, especially since they are widespread in the private trade. Amur Tigers and Red Pandas might be doable, both are in the private trade but not common. I don't beleive Giant Anteaters are kept in the privately, though.

There is a grubby zoo in Hawaii that has Giant Anteaters. I think there are a few other non-AZA zoos that have them in the private trade. I'd have to look, tho, because they aren't many. I've thought about doing Giant Anteaters, as they are one of the species I am very interested in.

Pana'ewa Rainforest Zoo. Have you been there? I'm not sure I'd call it "grubby", although it is home to many smaller, aesthetically unpleasing cages - as is commonly the case with smaller facilities.

From what I saw online, the Giant Anteater enclosure looked gross. It may not be horrible, but those are the vibes I got from sources online.

Yes.

As a general fact, a few people on the forum are always in some stage of working on one or multiple population/species lists.

Facts.

Chimpanzees are almost done. :D

Western Lowland Gorillas, Sumatran/Bornean Orangutans, Bonobos, Maned Wolves, Dholes, African Wild Dogs, Giant Otters, Sun Bears, Andean Bears, Sloth Bears, Malayan Tapirs, Nile Hippos, Pygmy Hippos, and Matschie's Tree-Kangaroos are all lists that I have completed. They are all posted on ZooChat and are all relatively updated and accurate.
