North Carolina Zoo North Carolina Zoo News 2024

As @Jonathan Petersson reported in the respective news thread, (1.0) Rowan the Harbor Seal was transferred over to the Fort Wayne (Children’s) Zoo on November 15th.

With this move to Fort Wayne, I believe this marks the end of displaying pinnipeds at the North Carolina Zoo, is that right?
Considering the last plan I heard was to bring penguins to North Carolina in Ronan's old exhibit, most likely. The exhibit's gone through several renovations during its time housing pinnipeds, maybe penguins are less maintenance-heavy?

I believe so, it's the end of an era and the end of pinnipeds in the state of North Carolina, at least for now.
I guess we'll see how penguins work out in that exhibit.

Yep, Ronan was the last pinniped at the zoo, so this move leaves Asheboro with zero pinnipeds and an empty anchor exhibit. This may potentially signal that a major renovation of the exhibit is on the horizon

Whether that entails a complete transformation into a Penguin exhibit or the zoo simply fixing up the exhibit for a fresh group of pinnipeds remains to be seen, as the zoo has released zero information on this.

But considering that they also never brought back Sea Lions after their last individual (Owen) transferred out back in 2021, the exhibit being repurposed for a different species and the zoo no longer exhibiting pinnipeds as a result seems like a real possibility.
