I really hope they can breed one of the bulls; it would really help the gene pool

So Gatorboy and Liv (I’ve heard those are their names) still have their own personal pond. Got it

Idk the names. But the same pair is still in their own pond on the other side of the complex near the frogs/indigo snake. I doubt breeding is a focus of having alligators, because they are mainly their to educate people on the fact that NC has wild alligators in the Southeast.
 
The zoo has just announced a Ocelot kitten was born to 13 year old mother Inca and father Diego. She is named Rio and was born in May. She is now on exhibit.

Also an eastern indigo snake hatched on July 21st at the zoo, with more eggs currently being incubated. So the zoos been having a bit of a baby boom as of recent.
 
Went to the zoo for the first time in a long while today. Have been extremely bogged down with work and was glad to be able to get out to Asheboro to see the zoo before the busy season begins. Some brief updates on whats happening:
  • The main Streamside building is currently being renovated. It was open to walk through, yet all exhibits were drained and plants were removed. It seems to be involving work on the pipes, which makes sense given the zoos maintenance backlog.
  • The Red River hog exhibit is being renovated, with some replanting evident.
  • Baboon exhibit is still open but will close sometime in coming months as the african pavilion will finally come down, or so they say. I will believe it when I see it.
  • The elephant exhibit closer to the entrance was closed for renovations. Yet nothing seemed to be occurring.

Are the baboons being phased out, having a new enclosure built, or will just be off display because of surrounding construction?

If I recall correctly, the African Pavilion contained the night quarters for the baboons. I would imagine a new holding area would be built (already done?), but whether the primates will be off-display during demolition to avoid stress or temporarily move I'm not sure.

As Milwaukee man said, the african pavilion was their indoor quarters. A new holding building is being completed and then the african pavilion will be demolished, and that portion of the outdoor baboon exhibit redone. This work according to documents I just found started in February and is supposed to be done by May 2020.
