A Chinese leopard has recently arrived in the UK

This collection is not open to the general public in the conventional sense, they offer 'bookings' for events such as 'big cat experience days, etc'.

The centre is run by Paradise Wildlife park, and acts as a quarantine facility at times for themselves and other collections. They have Sumatran tigers, Amur leopards, Pallas cats, and it looks like they will establish a pair of Chinese leopards too. I don't know if they have produced any cubs from any of the EEP species held there yet.

The site, ironically, was the former big cat sanctuary run by the Born Free Foundation for cats they had rescued. I think all the tiger enclosures have tops on them now due to local skydiving activities...apparently local groups were most alarmed when the sanctuary was first established, I guess you would be.
 
Last time i spoke to the owner he had just taken it over from Born Free and still had them on site as his tenants,he was saying it was going to cost about £250,000 to bring it up to the required standard to get a zoo licence for the site.
 
I'm a bit confused- the Paradise Wildlife Park is in Hertfordshire? Is that correct?

I've never been to the Hertfordshire Paradise Park- do they have any particularly interesting species nowadays? I know it started with mostly very common animals, as it is a sort of leisure park rather than a true zoo, I believe.
 
They organised the import of Owston's palm civet into Britain and bred the first animal in Europe, they also brought in a pair of Pallas's cats before they became fashionable again in the UK.

glad having found this great forum, here is my thread to start up: Is there someone in this Forum who is familiar with the Wildlife Heritage Foundation in Smarden,Ashford ? I would like to know more about the plans in taking part on the EEP for the North Chinese Leopard. Some time ago i read in a newspaper that they recieved a young male chinese leopard called "Tairi" from Zoo Paris. Unfortunately I can´t get more information about this on the official site of the wildlife heritage foundation. Now I´ve heard that one of our two Chinese Leopards here in Karlsruhe is planned to go to an Zoo in England. Are there other Zoos in the united kingdom except the whf which keep north chinese leopards at the moment or plan to do so ?

Howletts Zoo have a pair I think. I've not seen them in the UK fior quite a while now.

ISIS says it's a male. but then again ISIS says Chester's black ostrich is a female.
 
WHF have a young female North Chinese Leopard called Atara in an adjoining enclosure. I don't think they have been introduced to each other, if you get what I mean ;)

Tairi is being very shy and stays inside his sleeping den most days, however Atara is getting braver and was out on her platform yesterday and didn't run away from a few people on a photograhy group.:D

I think the two leopards from Tierpark Berlin are siblings, so lets hope, they won't breed. According to the entry of the North Chinese leopard in the zootierliste, there are just these two holdings.
 
North chinese leopard "Tingting" has left Zoo Karlsruhe on Tuesday. I hope to get some information soon about her well-being now living in Ashford.
 
excuse my asking, but in what ways do the north chinese leopards differ physically from other subspecies (like the persian leopards are larger, or amur have slightly thicker fur etc)?

'The North Chinese leopard is a medium sized leopard. The rosette pattern of the North Chinese leopard almost resembles a jaguar pattern. It has longer fur than other leopard subspecies and has the darkest coat of all leopard subspecies.'

Taken from wikipedia but its a start I guess.

A little off topic but in ISIS's defense, there are some female ostriches that have developed male colorations. There is one such female at Disney Animal Kingdom.
 
I was actually told the black Ostrich was female by a Chester keeper!

Just checked the 2007 annual report which backs up what I was told.
