Edinburgh Zoo Notes on a visit 6/8/12

It is a shame they have given up on the species, it was probably the best enclosure ive seen for them too! It's 3 years since i was there so my memory may be playing tricks, but i think it's only place i've been to with indoor viewing for them. I didn't need it there though, unlike other places i saw one outside & active on my first visit to the enclosure mid afternoon.

They moved to a different enclosure about 2 years ago, in which they were a lot less visible unfortunately. Their old enclosure now holds giant anteaters, whilst their more recent enclosure was the old wolf enclosure when you'll have last visited.

A shame as the other enclosure was indeed very good for seeing them!

Thanks, i didn't realise they'd moved.

It looks like the news about the animals that began to be regularly released under Hugh has now dried up again.

think that's a bit unfair, it's only been a month since the new CEO started and he's keeping up with the blog that Hugh was doing RZSS Blog and while not every bit of animal news gets passed on immediately, I doubt it did before.

I missed the Asian lions and Guinea baboons in the middle of the hill, also noted the monkey house with a few empty enclosures, barest it has been for a long while, the drill group looked great, but the first visit i have ever had, without seeing a Diana monkey:eek:

We spotted the group of Guinea baboons recently, the cage for them is rather small and there is obviously no space for such active animal. The cage dimension measured approximately 16 feet tall and 36 feet wide. They don't belong in a small confine cage instead they suppose to be on grounds or an open enclosure, rather than barren cage, to better approximate animals' natural environment like Gelada baboon enclosure.

My partner has spoken to one of the volunteers and based on the conversation he had with her, the baboons have been, in the confined cage, for almost a year already. At first, they were introduced to their refurbished enclosure, where the Giant Pandas are currently living in the compound. Perhaps, the Guinea baboon group should move in former Maned Wolf enclosure, there is a plenty of space!

I agree wholeheartedly with CL on this point, although i missed the baboons on my recent visit, i have seen the cage and it is on the small side for such a large group, your idea is a good one if you are referring to the wolf enclosure next to the African plains, but it would need some work on it to make it baboon-proof.

I thought the Guinea Baboons were only in Edinburgh Zoo while their new home in their French Zoo was being made? Could be wrong tho

Kiang i did hear a while back that the Baboons were going to Blair Drummond but then the safari park had to fix i think their elephant enclosure then spoke to a keeper and he said some of the group were meant to be leaving still now word there ha ha mmmm u know what EZ is like plans change all the time just wish they would do something with the carnivore row such an eye sore :(

Sorry, I hadn't meant that as a critisism of the new CEO - the info stream seems to have slowed down since late last year/earlier this year.

I think they have been there for longer than a year - they moved out when the work started on the Panda houses.

It's a pity, as their old enclosure was great for them:

Do they get out into the enclosure when the lions are indoors?

I believe Edinburgh took these Guinea Baboons to help out Vincennes Zoo (Paris) while it is being rebuilt and the large group filled a vacant enclosure- the old Ape House(now Pandas). Now they may not really want them anymore- a fairly classic situation in Zoos.;)

The other half(?) of the large Vincennes troop of Guinea baboons went previously to Port Lympne in Kent. After several years in a cage they now have a large grass enclosure surrounded by an electric fence- an ideal habitat, though I recently noticed two or three surplus 'big' males are back in the cage by the entrance area where the whole group was previously kept.

If Vincennes Zoo had closed permanently it wouldn't surprise me if these baboons had been euthanased, rather than temporary(?) homes being found for them. I am not sure if Port Lympne will keep theirs permanently now. Being such free breeders, Vincennes would only need one group back to restock their new enclosure(if indeed there is going to be one?)

Does anyone know if any other Zoos, e.g. in France, took Guinea baboons from Vincennes?

I have heard that the zoo is getting Visayan Spotted deer going to where the Goral are and the goral being moved to where the Maned Wolves were :)

I've heard plans for quite a few movements between enclosures of existing animals + a couple of new groups coming in, including the above mentioned by Mr Gelada. Personally i'd rather see maned wolves, not a massive hoofstock person although the banteng is lovely.

The painted hunting dogs have all been mixed together, so hopefully the zoo might have puppies soon.

You are right here. At my recent visit the hunting dogs were off show due to a imminent birth. Also I think one rock hyrax in a small cage far away fromthe public, if you walk up towards the lions and baboons if you look left back towards the gelada baboons, you should see it.

A female Bantang is arriving shortly to join the male according to the zoo's blog.
Where are the Red River Hogs to in the Zoo?

Good news about the female Banteng, they're a great species.

Think the river hogs are only back temporarily to help out another collection (not 100% sure though). The youngsters amongst the warty pig group are cute. Female banteng has already arrived I was told.
