Oakland Zoo Oakland Zoo News 2018

Found a new map on a KQED article of the zoo. Don’t bother reading the article as it’s a bunch of SJW nonsense that talks about how predatory animals shouldn’t be kept in captivity. I’ll post the map here as well as on the media page of Oakland zoo.

By the way, if anyone has seen the muntjac at the zoo, please tell me because I’ve been going to that zoo for 10 years and I still can’t find that muntjac. I know it’s just a muntjac but it’s been bugging me for a while. If there’s only one muntjac in that exhibit that never shows, it seems like a waste of space. If anyone also has pictures of this elusive animal, please redirect me to a link.

I've seen it exactly once near the front of the exhibit. By the time I dug my camera up, it had disappeared back into the brush.

Still disappointing to see. Especially that "Tropical Rainforest".

That’s unfortunate about the muntjac. He’s most likely the most elusive animal in captivity in California as many people I have asked have never seen him. At lest you got to see him ! :p

I think at this point it’s became a joke how frustrated I am about the lack of a master plan outside of Californian trail. Let’s hope the “tropical rainforest” becomes something better like a Indonesian area or a South American area. What would you prefer?

Personally, I'd prefer a South American area (mainly because Indonesia has been done to death in other zoos in California, i.e. Tiger River in SDZ, Tiger Trail in SDZSP, Sunda Forest in Fresno, etc.). Not necessarily a "ruined temple with jaguars" but a simple jungle trek with an aviary for macaws, an island for lowland pacas/howler monkeys, a nocturnal "mining" shaft for ringtail cats, margays, vampire bats/seba's short tailed bats, etc. (I know margays are getting phased out, so ocelots can work instead).

For people wondering about where all the animals are coming from...

...1.1 Grey wolves from the California wolf Center. Paired to breed.
Only one wolf is from California Wolf Center. The other is from a buffalo ranch in Montana. To answer someone else's followup question, I am pretty sure they are NOT Mexican wolves but rather North American wolves. According to my guide at California Wolf Center (which I toured one year ago), all North American gray wolves (except Mexican) are now considered one subspecies, with the possible exception of Arctic wolves.

Today marks the opening of the long-awaited California Trail complex.

Oakland Zoo’s 56-Acre California Trail Expansion Opens

I’ll be visiting the place as soon as I can but the review might not be up for a few weeks since I’m a bit behind on online courses.

Thanks for the correction @Arizona Docent. I also have to correct myself as one of the condors comes from San Diego and the other from Oregon. I haven’t heard about this taxonomy change, is it new because Wikipedia still lists the North American grey wolf as multiple subspecies.

If an re-arrangement I would like to see the papers that made it. David Mech & Co. heard on this one?

Well, only a day after it's grand opening and the gondola is already having difficulties:Visitors Stuck on Gondola Lift at Oakland Zoo

To be fair, the gondolas have been running daily for... a couple months now. It's not like it was their first day in operation.

I think at this point it’s became a joke how frustrated I am about the lack of a master plan outside of Californian trail. Let’s hope the “tropical rainforest” becomes something better like a Indonesian area or a South American area. What would you prefer?

Neither actually. I'm not convinced that Oakland would put in the effort to properly plant the area to resemble a rainforest. I'm also tired of the ABC mentality of zoos, so I want something different. But what that is, I'm not sure. I was thinking lately of a Central Indian forest given the climate and landscape. But I'm not convinced that would end being too restrictive without pulling from the opposite ends of the sub-continent.

The zoo confirmed that the baby hornbill has hatched on their Instagram. The hornbill hatched about five weeks ago and the keepers are affectionately calling it Butterbean.

I confirmed with a keeper that they are still going to look for a partner for Nikko the lar gibbon. The only catch is that it’s very difficult to find one as Nikko is a non breeding male and he’s very old.

The zoo has been shockingly responsive to my questions so if anyone has any questions about the zoo and the animals I'll send them an email.

Luigi the rarely seen indian muntjac turned 20 yesterday. I asked them a few questions about the exhibit itself and they said that they have been talking for years about what to do with the exhibit as many of the original inhabitants are long gone or very old. They seem to be leaning towards an endangered species but they are undecided. What would you guys want to see in the indian muntjac exhibit once it becomes empty?

I would like to see Eld’s deer or Siberian musk deer, depending on the size of the exhibit. Both species are the TAG priority species.

Both species would be interesting to see for sure as I’m pretty sure both are not featured in Californian zoos much if not at all. It might throw off the theming of the zone as both species are not tropical rainforest animals but at this point I really don’t care.

Forgot to mention that when I contacted Oakland zoo, they mentioned that they are planning on renovating and improving any current exhibits. I would personally want to see a better chimp exhibit but what do you guys want to see?

I would definitely like the zoo to do some work on the giraffe exhibit. Its not the prettiest and is pretty much a dustball. Also from what I have heard the elephant viewing could be improved. But the chimps should be a focus, although personally I would like them to swap then out for Bonobos, given San Franciscos commitment to thr chimps. Definitely the exhibit though should be much better with a second exhibit for separation. I don’t mind the cage look, yet some visitors do, so maybe a netted exhibit would be good.

More responses from Oakland zoo after asking about the Californian trail. They mentioned that they might add some smaller species in the far distant future (I mentioned yellow-legged frogs, waterfowl, burrowing owls, and alameda whip snakes). Of course it’s a matter on how much space can they fit but I think they can do it. Maybe a renovation to the Californian conservation building could be done to house some of the more smaller wildlife. What do you guys think? It would definitely contrast the SF zoo’s new Californian exhibit with a focus on rare reptiles and amphibians.

I think it would be a good idea to educate people about rare and endangered reptiles and amphibians in California. I'm honestly not a big fan of the California Conservation building. (Minus the viewing for the grizzly bears).
