Oakland Zoo Oakland Zoo News 2018

So sad, ... how old was Nikko actually?
At the time of his death he was 35. He was fairly old for his species but he died around the same age range as most wild gibbons (30-35 years old) whereas the lifespan of captive gibbons is 40-50 years old.

(Sorry for all the typos on the previous post)

The main zoo site removed everything related to lar gibbons on the main site. Not really news but I found it sad how quickly they took any mention of the species out from the main page. This also could mean that the species may not return to the zoo and a different gibbon species might be planned but for once I’m not going to do speculation, Nikko death is more important to me than if any other species comes to the zoo.

His body will be sent to the zoo so it could be buried.

I can tell that you really cared about Nikko and are greatly saddened by his death. I'm very sorry and I know how hard it is to lose an animal you love
