It is with great sadness that I have to report the death of regular Zoochat contributor 'Gigit'. I'm sure a number of readers of the UK, Paignton Zoo and Orangutans In Europe pages in particular will be familar with her postings over the years.
As many will be aware, 'Gigit''s first love was Orangutans. Our connection first came about through her particular bond with one of Paignton's early Orangs- the old female 'Bulu' who came with several others from London Zoo. I was able to furnish her with some details of Bulu's past life at London, where she was born in 1961 and was the first Orangutan to be reared in the UK. That link resulted in a friendship and several meet-ups at Paignton over the years.
'Gigit' was not only a very regular visitor to the zoo, but also a keen and discerning observer, both of her beloved Orangs and also all the other species at Paignton. As a result she was sometimes critical of the zoo, but if so it was because she both cared for, and was concerned for, her local zoo.
Her contributions to Zoochat will be much missed, I'm sure, and not least by myself.
