Obsessive Anti-Zoos Are A Headache

The negativity surrounding the Bronx and LA's Elephant programs never ceases to make my blood boil. So many of the single Elephants remaining in phase-out zoos are the remnants of a very different management style than we see today. People can't seem to get it through their heads that the proper care of these animals isn't identical to how their peers' may look due to less than ideal circumstances in their pasts. Its frankly so exhausting watching ignorant people and even some sanctuaries (like PAWS recently did when Lulu passed) use things like arthritis and chronic issues to defend an anti-captivity stance when the cause of those issues is so clearly no longer happening.
Oh yeah frfr. I know damn well that the Bronx could do amazing things with elephants. Thank Christ the actual politicians in the Bronx seem to love their zoo

One funny one:
It's about that time of year again that trained reindeer are in demand for seasonal events, and also that time of year that anti-zoos complain about said seasonal events.
One such goes about an event that takes the animals 300 miles from their home, and then takes them 300 miles back - a 600 mile round trip!
To which my main thought was....
....
do you know how far wild reindeer migrate in search of food?
It's greater than 600 miles!
And they don't even get there in a trailer.....

Whether you agree with it or not, I think you're deliberately missing their point for the sake of being flippant. Wild reindeer migrating is not equivalent to being in a trailer for 300 miles. That is a silly argument.

I do also think there's a big difference between being anti-zoo and anti-animal performance. I know plenty of folks who enjoy and support zoos, who take no pause with the concept- but who hesitate when it comes to animals performing for entertainment, whether that be trick-based shows, animal encounters, petting zoos, etc.

I agree with Chlidonias' post above- that there's a big difference between an animal naturally roaming that big of a space and an animal being driven that distance in a trailer. But there's also a big difference between a reindeer migrating to find food (a natural behavior) and a reindeer being used in a seasonal event (human-trained behaviors).

I'm not even necessarily saying that it's wrong they're using reindeers for this. They're certainly more domesticated than a lot of the animals I personally take pause with when it comes to entertainment. But there's a big difference between someone saying "I think it's cruel to put this animal in a zoo" and "I think it's cruel to put this animal on a stage".
