The zoo found a surprise this winter; an Emu egg!
From the zoo's facebook page,
"Our emus were “sexed” when they were babies at Brookfield Zoo. They were both thought to be males. It’s not uncommon for birds to be sexed incorrectly, especially birds that are not sexually dimorphic (males and females look dramatically different). We believe that Charlie is our female, and Blue is the male. So far we’ve only found 2 eggs, but more may follow. While we will allow the emus to sit on their eggs, we will make sure that they are not able to hatch. Charlie and Blue are full siblings, and we don’t have the space for breeding at our facility."

I visited Ochsner Park Zoo on Wednesday. I'll be there a lot over the summer, so I wanted to get acquainted with the staff and the facility. :D I hadn't visited since 2014, so I was quite excited to check out this gem of a zoo.

Despite the zoo's small size, all of the facilities for its animals are wonderful, and it is obvious that its small team is dedicated to its animals. I recommend that anyone that lives in the area should come and visit, because this zoo is as cute as it gets!

Here is the recent zoo news:
  • The female Barred Owl was euthanized recently due to her declining health. A companion for their remaining owl will be sought out eventually, but there is no rush due to the solitary nature of this species.
  • The Mexican Gray Wolves have gone through a shift in their dominance recently, so there has been lots of tension in their enclosure. This zoo participates in the SSP and SAFE programs for this species, despite them not being AZA-accredited.
  • The Canada Lynx pair have been showing breeding behavior recently, and they are hoping to breed them, as was recommended by the SSP.

I didn't realize there was a Canada Lynx SSP. Are you going to work here or something?

The zoo announced via Facebook that the monkeys will be leaving for the Brookfield Zoo in the first week of May. The main reasons being the monkeys’ age and health concerns as they age that Brookfield is more equipped to handle. The monkey building is also old and not really suitable for the monkeys.

It's a shame to see them leaving. I was hoping to work with them over the summer. :(
