The zoo found a surprise this winter; an Emu egg!
From the zoo's facebook page,
"Our emus were “sexed” when they were babies at Brookfield Zoo. They were both thought to be males. It’s not uncommon for birds to be sexed incorrectly, especially birds that are not sexually dimorphic (males and females look dramatically different). We believe that Charlie is our female, and Blue is the male. So far we’ve only found 2 eggs, but more may follow. While we will allow the emus to sit on their eggs, we will make sure that they are not able to hatch. Charlie and Blue are full siblings, and we don’t have the space for breeding at our facility."
