Paignton Zoo odds and ends from Paignton

:DCamel born yesterday, much darker than when Trevor was born. Was laying down in the paddock this morning being overlooked by mum Carmel.

The Macaque baby:eek: is doing really well and mum has brought her over to me by the window where she is joined by the rest of the siblings .Puzzle has a girlfriend! He is so funny and always greets those humans who visit him often.:D

The Gorilla's are going through a bought of colds this is the 4 youngsters.
One can smell Pertinax before he appears as he is using ONION b.o. basher...:o

The orangs made a break for freedom as Demo broke two doors didnt get far. Still no patter of tiny feet Mali was climbing the rafters inside today.

Just come back from a talk by curator of mammals and director of operations, Neil Bemment. I found out some interesting information and, luckily, I managed to ask him a few questions at the end.

Regarding the orang-utans, apparently the first was supposed to be due mid-march, however, it would appear that a keeper was a little over-enthusiastic with the local press so it could be mid-april instead.

Not sure if this has already been posted, but there are four tiger cubs (genders, as yet, unknown) which will go on display at easter.

Finally, I asked him a little about future plans. Apparently they want to demolish Primley and, as well as the new baboon exhibit, are planning a 'Himalayan glade' which will feature, among other things, red pandas. Plus, he mentioned that he dreamt of the fields being turned into a south american grassland exhibit featuring giant anteaters - this may or may not happen.

Well Mr Bemmnet is the Orangutan expert so say no more.........:o..
Isnt it easy to blame the keepers.............
Everything has to be approved by the press officer.

Any news of any more oriental white storks arriving, where in the park is Primley?

It's the old bit up to the top left of the zoo with the baboons, giant tortoises, aviaries and red pandas. Actually that reminds me, there is a new male red panda in quarantine.

Randy the new Pandy is now in with Mandy out of quarantine

The Boys were in with the Boys again today outside this time they were so funny........The Gorilla boys that is all four of them were having such fun.getting piggy back rides.N'Dowe took great delight in standing on the top of the frame and beating his chest as if to say I am the king of the castle. It got a bit boisterous when Kivu decided to pull and rip one of the keepers quarantine plastic jump suits the sleeve ripped of and then it was the keepers chasing him to get the sleeve back.:eek:Took lots of pictures but cant seem to download them as when i think i have they dissapear anyone else having problems?
:(No patter of tiny feet.Put the booties and mitts on hold;)

Sounds like the Gorilla keepers in Paignton have fun. Why was he wearing a quarantine suit though?

That sounds as though it was worth seeing! Maybe the stork will have been before my visit tomorrow. Ever hopeful!

N'Dowe and Kiri are still in quarantine. For reasons I don't fully understand, and maybe someone can enlighten me, this has allowed them to be mixed with Kivu and Kiondu, but the keepers wear protective clothing when in contact with them. When orangutans Mali and Demo came from Munster they weren't mixed with the other orangs until the full 6 months were up

I think they put them all in quarantine because of the enclosure. That mean't it was easier to manage and they could have a head start on the intereactions.

Am sure I watched a video or news clip on these?

That does make sense. I must have missed the news clip.

Am not sure where I saw it. Here it is on the website but I know I watched a video clip.

Thanks. I've often wondered what exactly an ape being well cared for in a European zoo could catch that warrants 6 months quarantine. They are not very likely to have rabies. Paignton's gorillas have done OK, and Demo and Mali had each other for company, but it seems a bit hard on a lone animal to have that long in isolation on top of an unsettling move.

Even if they were out of quarantine its still good practice to stop transfer of disease between the two species.

Never seen Gorilla (or any great ape keepers) wearing anything like that before. I guess its a good idea though.

Different places different rules, but it should be their top priority. Stops Gorillas picking up anything from the keepers and vice versa.
