Does anyone have any information on what the Columbus Zoo breeds in their off exhibit breeding area? Or even if they have one?

Also if anyone has any information on other zoo's as well I would be interested in hearing about them. As far as...

What species they keep off exhibit?
Why they do it?
What type of enclosures to the animals have?

I don't know about the Columbus Zoo, but I do know a little about the Cincinnati Zoo's offsite breeding center. I know for sure that the zoo's herd of Giant Eland is located here now, I know they breed their Cheetahs here as well, and last I heard they have some Central Chinese Goral here as well. I know previously the Red Crowned Cranes were held here before they were put out on their new exhibit a few years ago. I've also heard something about zebras here as well. Whether they have a seperate herd of Grevy's Zebras living here, the Grevy's Zebras on exhibit now lived there before they were put on exhibit, or if the zoo's Damara Zebras live here now that they've left the zoo, I don't know. There are probably more species but I just don't know about them. They probably breed some of their small cats here as well. I've heard that the breeding center is very close to where I live but I haven't been able to find it. The zoo does this mainly to well, breed their shyer, endangered species that they don't use AI for, and they use it as a holding facility, as the zoo has limited space. The Giant Elands are one of the best examples of this. They have lived at the offsite center ever since they were taken off exhibit. When the zoo's new African Savannah exhibit is built, they will return to the zoo. Other than that I don't know much about it.

Interesting, they aren't listed on ISIS so I wonder how many other animals aren't I would assume quite a few.

Mhm. The zoo doesn't list the animals at the breeding center on ISIS. Though with the animals at the zoo they do a pretty good job with keeping it updated. I don't know if it's been updated recently though. The new Eastern Bongo calf hasn't been listed yet.

As far as I know, the National Zoo does NOT open their Virginia facility at all (not even once a year).

I knew Cincinnati had a cheetah breeding center, but I did not know they had hoofstock there as well. They have also purchased a larger 500 acre farm farther away from Cincinnati that I believe is still unoccupied but will be home to a small cat breeding center and then eventually other areas.

Bronx Zoo used to have a breeding center on a private island off the coast of either South Carolina or Georgia, but I believe they have closed that.

Busch Gardens has a private hoofstock ranch somewhere in south Florida.

The AZA is cooperatively building a private elephant ranch in south Florida.

Pittsburgh has a private elephant ranch, as mentioned above.

I would be interested to learn of any others.

here is a video of it when its open.

Thanks for providing this information, the AZA elephant ranch is news to me.

Thanks for the video of National Zoo CRC - I never knew they did a public day. (I missed my chance to visit as part of the 2005 Association of Zoo & Aquarium Docent conference, because I signed up too late and that field trip sold out immediately).

In case some of you are wondering why there were guys on horses fighting with swords at a conservation festival, it is because the CRC is a former cavalry fort and they were doing reenactments.

Does anyone have any updates on the off site facilities? I'm very interested in Cincinnati's Off site Facility. Kudu 21 do you know if the Giant Eland are still there? I live in the Pittsburgh area and the last week of august the Pittsburgh zoo is giving guests a opportunity to visit the International Conservation Center. I might have to take them up on there offer :).
