Bristol Zoo (Closed) Okapi Birth

Yes, it would be good if MD can find out what the current situation is at Marwell regarding Okapi pregnancies(or lack of...)

So can anyone actually confrim an okapi has been born at Bristol?

Thank you :)

The Studbook says there has been a birth, I wasn't sure because on the same site it also had the date of the birth as 2007.

However thinking back Bristol's last calf was Mbuti, but I was hoping that someone could confrim the birth that visit's the zoo often.

1. Lodja hasn't been at Bristol long enough to have had a baby sired by Rubani in 2007.

2. Only Rubani has been on show iin the last few days.

So I think it must be correct but not announced officially yet.

Hi all,

Yes there is an okapi calf at Bristol, not sure about it being female though. Mother and baby have been outside quite a bit and the calf has met dad through the fence. As far as I know all is going well, the keepers had video cameras set up in the stable to see the birth and monitor suckling etc and all looks good at the mo. Not sure if there's been a press release yet as it's early days.

Thanks for confirmation.

The information about it being female came from the studbook, so I gather keepers have informed them.

That is what is odd about Studbooks- a few are available to anyone who cares to find them online, but the majority are not.

If only the CD-ROM which ISIS produces , containing all current stud-books , could be made available to us zoo-chatters !

Micheala's Animal Roadshow was at Chester when Dicky returned from london Zoo. The program went out earlier this week and during an interview a keeper confirmed that London's female is pregnant. :)

I started a thread in London's forum about this news.

Bristol's baby Okapi has finally got a name! The studbook says she is called Luani :)
