Okapi

Yep,

15 it is mate. For sure, the female Camilla now at Rotterdam (on loan from Kobenhavn, Denmark) is of US born parentage (Chuma and Katanda), but born in Kobenhavn 3/1/1994.

Once in a while exchanges occur between the SSP and EEP. I seriously hope that with the global species management for okapi exchanges will happen on a more frequent basis.

Again, I am confident no okapis from Epulu have been sent to EEP zoos for now. Somehow I do not understand as the funding operation is half EEP driven. The SSP over the 1990-1999 decade has imported 5 individuals ex Epulu. Their population is more robust and genetically more diverse .. I think.
 
So do you think anymore will leave the Epulu centre in the future? a new bloodline would really help the EEP at this stage.
 
I keep my fingers crossed that now is the ripe time to have 3-4 okapis leave Epulu to infuse fresh genes in the EEP population. I need to consult with Antwerpen on this though.

I imagine that would be easier than getting any fresh wildcaught ones from Epulu? even one pair of unrelated animals from the USA put into different breeding situations in Europe would help infuse new blood.
 
What about the Okapis in Japan are they ex Europe or ex us bloodlines? could they be used in a swap in bloodlines?
 
i think the okapi in japan came from the us, San Diego and i think Dallas too.
 
We would really like to have some EEP Okapi blood over here in the states. There are still some founders from the EEP population not yet represented in the US. However, I here that there is blue tongue in Europe and that is causing some problems for import requirements/permits etc. I know that my two Epulul males are not represent in the EEP at all. The Pretoria Zoo got two surplus males from San Diego WAP and Japan will not let go of theirs - they worked to hard and spent a lot of money just to have the animals they hold.

I am not sure which bloodlines exist in the US and which ones are solely represented in Europe. Can you give us an insight here?

I know within the EEP major bloodlines are Antwerpen, Rotterdam, Bristol and Basel. To my mind a larger scale exchange with SSP stock is required soonish (and not just from the SSP perspective). Besides the SSP stock is more robust in numbers than the EEP and at least continentally a freeze has been put on sole bull holders for females for another 3 years or so. Thus the best the SSP would get is a few overrepresented males and this in exchange for some highly prized unrelated female okapi ex the US (to even out the skewed sex ratios in Europe.

Sadly, I do not own a copy of the studbook so cannot verify my assessment yet regarding the entire EEP stock. I can check with my EAZA Yearbooks though and will get back to you .. here and/or by pm!


Regarding the Japan okapi. The JAZGA region seems to be governed by municipalities that own most major zoos, yet treat their cooperative breeding programmes as if these should be for financial recompense (seriously outdated ..... sadly) when transporting individuals of opted species ... even in country wise.

Can you tell me what separate blood lines exist within the SSP (save for White Oaks 2.0 + 0.1 captive-borns from Epulu Station?

What ages are the current Epulu stock and how many have bred in 2007 and 2008?

That would be great if I could get an update on the EEP population, my information is current up to 2003. As for the Japanese Okapi, they are managed via the AZA's Okapi SSP. Within the SSP there are a few major bloodlines:

San Diego (Mokolo x Kenge) and (Mokolo x Kamina)
Dallas (Vivianne x Kopo)
Brookfield (Uhuruh x Mufuh)
Cincinnati (Asengu - a female imported in 1986)
EEP imports Gerard, Fons, and Max
and the White Oak founders

As for Epulu, I dont know if there has been any breeding lately, however a female Lomela (dam of Romakari, a White Oak male) died last year.
