Oklahoma City Zoo Oklahoma City Zoo News

Not really news, but I just found out that Asian elephant bull Kandula (at 9000+ lbs) is now larger than the other bull Rex. I learned this from a video (stating he’s the largest elephant at the zoo) they just posted on their social medias a couple hours ago. Idk if that’s been the case for a while now, but I just found out and thought it was interesting.

Hes all ready larger then Rex he grew quickly, I just hope he can go to St. Louis as Maliha ,Jade, and even Priya need to breed Asap as they can not mate with their father Raja, and St. Louis has enough room for two bulls I believe.

I think at this point Kandula shoud just stay at OKC, Achara is almost 7 and he will be able to breed with her very soon. A suitable bull for St Louis would be Tucker or Bodhi since they are both very socialized young bulls that are at the perfect age to move to a breeding institution. Tucker would be more ideal as he is more genetically valuable than Bodhi. There are also several other suitable bulls across the country including Billy (LA), Dahlip, Sneezy, the Ringling boys, and more. The SSP and St Louis just need to get it together and bring a new bull to the zoo ASAP.

I believe Jake or Samudra (Half brother to Tucker and uncle to Jake Jakes mother Natasha is the older half-sister to Samudra) are also suitable bulls for St Louis, they both are quite well socialized Jake coming from one of the largest herds in North America, and Samudra living with in facility that was designed and has a historical reputation of housing multiple bulls

Three updates:

1. The cheetahs have arrived! Construction is complete on the new Predator Pass exhibit. Cheetahs have returned to the zoo after an absence of a few years. There is also a new habitat for the African painted dogs, and it is a HUGE improvement over the old one. I continue to be impressed with these smaller projects (Predator Pass, Raptor Ridge, Wetlands Walkway) in between major new exhibits.

2. The zoo’s critically endangered Guatemalan beaded lizards produced eggs.

3. Demo is complete for Expedition Africa. They are currently working on underground utilities.

The zoo finally issued a press release about the opening of Predator Pass. The two new cheetahs are five-year-old brothers, Boomer and Pistol Pete, from Little Rock Zoo. Three new African painted dogs (10-year old male, Bomani, and three-year-old sisters, River and Pele) arrived from Kansas City Zoo. These three will form a separate pack from the current pack of five painted dogs already residing in OKC.

Not sure where Pete got the name from, as he's Oscar in the studbook and that's what he was called at Little Rock! Thanks for the update.

Just repeating what was in the zoo’s release. I suspected those might be name changes, as they’re clearly references to Oklahoma’s biggest college sports teams.

An update on the $25 million Expedition Africa that will cover 12 acres. The article mentions the key species at this stage will include giraffe, meerkats, honey badgers, flamingos, lemurs and other rainforest species. The zoo's historic pachyderm building will be getting an upgrade - the zoo will maintain the exterior but convert the interior for smaller species and an event space. The new giraffe barn will provide year-round indoor viewing complete with a deck extending from the pachyderm building. Construction is currently focussed on building the foundations and levelling ground whilst attempting to maintain as much pre-existing vegetation and trees as possible (including an 100-year-old cottonwood). After this Africa expansion, a new masterplan will be written. Up next are upgrades for their reptile building and the sea lions.
