Old Chester Zoo Maps

I was wondering as there are many members and fans of Chester zoo on this forum if any of you had any old maps that you could scan and send me as I would love to see how the zoo as progressed from the early days.

Or does anyone know a site that would have the maps on I could download and look at

Start collecting your own... or go into the zoo library and look at all the archive copies there. Better still, buy the entire history of Zoo News and Guide on CD-ROM, it's also available from the library, priced at £5.

@SMR Considering I was only looking for a few old maps and requested I feel in a good manner then I open this thread to find a reply like yours makes me feel why should a continue to contribute to this site any longer
I only update people now through p/m's basically because of the attitude of some of the members on here.

I will seriously be considering whether or not to contribute to this site in future

Merry christlmas to all

I thought SMR's reply was very helpful. I have also been looking for old maps but didn't know something like that was available to buy from the zoo itself, its definately something I will pick up on my next visit. Thanks SMR.

@Waddi it was they way he started his reply start collecting your own... I agree the rest of the reply was very helpful I have already e-mailed cghester requesting a cd rom.

I know I should not tar everyone with the same brush but I have noticed over the last few months that some of the replies on here are getting a little out of order and in some cases personnel this is why I am considering my future on here.

I used to love contributing to this forum but as I have said before I only update through P/M's these days and feel this is the best way to go.

Is the library now open again?

Not having seen it, how large is Chester's library? What resources does it contain?
It's a pretty decent size,as it is housed in one wing of Cedar House in the zoo,but if you were to compare it to the ZSL Libary in London you would say it was very small. If you have ever seen the Libary at Twycross where part of the Bartlett Society Archives,is kept then size wise it is about 10 times larger than the Libary at Twycross.

What resources does it contain?
The library has physical copies of almost all the annual reports, all the guide books and zoo newsletters and a huge amount of correspondence between Chester and other zoos around the world. There are also a lot of reference books, posters and a vast amount of data that is digitally archived, including photographs and OCR'd versions of the guides.

Then there's the world's freakiest stuffed owl and a long lost sculpture...

...so all sorts of fascinating material.

Just recieved my Cd-Rom and surprise surprise NO maps of the zoo yet the disc is very very interesting and you can see how the zoo as progressed I must admit it is a very worthy item to have in any collectin but the problem I have is I am still looking for Zoo Maps from the past can any one help

For those who wish to purchase this item (I would recommend you do if you are interested in Chester Zoos past), here is the information I was given to purchase by post

If you could forward a cheque in the sum of £5.50 (£5.00 for the cd and 50p p&p) we will post this out to you. The cheque should be made payable to Chester Zoo and the envelope should be addressed to the Discovery and Learning Division at the address below. Please also enclose a brief note advising that you wish to purchase the CD.

I hope this helps

That's Odd as mine has maps - there are 2x CD Roms you can get, 1 has all copies of the zoo news and the other has all of the old zoo guodebooks with maps

Many thanks for your help Karoocheetah as I was only aware of the one cd-rom as advice given by SMR earlier in the thread I did ask for Old maps but maybe it was misunderstood.
I have now requested the second Cd-Rom again many thanks

No worries Adrian - have fun, they are both an interesting snapshot of the zoo history even though the formatting makes your eyes water sometimes!

I only have one CD.

This contains two folders. Our Zoo News 1937-1960 and Chester Zoo News 1962-1982. Maps appeared in every issue of Chester Zoo News from March 1965 until December 1980.

I haven't heard of the zoo guidebook CD.

Can now confirm there are 2 cd roms just ordered the second one.

Youn can do it the same way as theother and it cost's the same price again

many thanks karoocheetah for the information

The original CD-ROM both I and bongorob mentioned is full of old maps, for those who haven't spotted them they're on the middle pages of almost all the issues of Zoo News and Guide.

The CD-ROM of guides is only produced in limited numbers and is not available all the time. Those who attended the EAZA barbecue last summer will recall that we had one of the first copies in the auction (I can't remember who was the winning bidder). Bear in mind that there are far fewer guide books than there are issues of Zoo News and Guide, and that the latter provide considerably greater detail on historical zoo developments on a month-by-month basis.

For the ZooChatters who have the Chester Zoo News CD and like to do things the easy way!
