Heya, I found an old map in a guide book from Marwell, from 1988/1989 (i think) and i thought i'd share it with you guys for a comparison to todays one.

here

Yep, that would be the 88/89; same design to a map I have in the 1991 guidebook with a few differences. Thanks for sharing. :)

One thing I find hard to imagine was that the old gibbon enclosure had the gibbons on one side with patas monkeys on the other: Doubt there was much space for either species.

Been doing a clear out recentley, so I managed to gather up some of my oldest Marwell maps, photograph them (scanner's a bit dodgy) and put them up for ZooChatter's interest. Based on Zoo History's figures, they date from 1982, 1991, 1995, 1998 and 2000 respectivley. There are scribbles marking away childhood doodles on a couple of maps, so apologies there. Select and then click to see full size to read them properly.

Interesting to see the Development Areas in one of the maps. One of them obviously became Roof Of The World, but what's the story behind the one local to where Graze Cafe is now?

Cheers for these! :)

Given that it was 1998, the development there would've been the education centre and the owlery; ROTW didn't start work till 2004. As for the other one, 'development for small cats', no idea. Nothing ever came of it, and that site had been reserved for the African Valley for over two decades, so I guess it was just a project that never got off it's feet. I heard that Marwell would have taken either Pallas or Sand Cats when the oppurtunity came to obtain a new cat species (they obviously took the latter) so I wonder if it was ever intended for Pal's.

No problemo! :D

The masterplan map in the Science & Learning Centre is a vision of the park in 2021 (originally drawn up Feb 2008), though it gives more emphasis on layout and amenities than animals, because out of all the possibilities they can be the most random, but they're are few interesting ones: 'Great Ape Accomodation' in the Chapman's Zebra paddock being one of them. But as the propsed areas for new tiger and leopard enclosures is now the site of the new cheetah enclosure, and I hear a new layout is being drawn up yet again, it could be completely different!

:D The plan was that the Przewalski's Horse paddock would be the Boreal Forest biome, and the planting for the area is already there. New enclosures for the amur tigers and leopards would be built in the space, but as the cheetahs are now scheduled to go there, the plans must have changed pretty quick. You can still see them earmarked there on the masterplan map, along with a 'Carnivore House' between that biome and the Valley.
