I've been busy updating my records of species kept at Chester Zoo.

Link to the previous versions 2009 and 2007.

http://www.zoochat.com/38/old-species-chester-2009-update-87961/

MAMMALS
New species.
Canadian Black Bear (Ursus americanus americanus) 1930-1941

Boris identified as Western Chimpanzee. Subspecies now ammended to 1950-still in the zoo.

Orang Utan data revised after looking at the studbook. Rajang was not the first Orang Utan born at Chester, there were two babies born in 1964 which did not survive.

North American Raccoon earliest date now 1935

Since the last update I have learnt that the male giraffe Patrick 1985-1993 was a pure bred Rothschild's and not a hybrid as I assumed. The list has been ammended. Also the last Masai Giraffe at Chester died in 1992 and not as formerly posted, 1989, and the first known arrival was 1959 not 1961.

Alot of work gone into this - it is exceptional. However, you have listed Sri Lankan elephant as still in zoo - this is no longer correct as Sheba was, I believe, the last Sri Lankan. If I'm correct, this is the current makeup of the Asian elephant herd:

Maya: Indian (E.m indicus)

Jangoli: Unsure, but I don't think it's Sri Lankan (though that could be my mistake and make this post redundant)

Thi Hi Way: Burmese (no longer a valid ssp and instead grouped into indicus?)

Sithami: No ssp. status

Sundara: No ssp. status

Nayan: No ssp. status

Jamilah: No ssp. status

Upali: No ssp. status

Fishes part 2.

Thanks JavanRhino. Sheba was still living at the start of the year, but I never revised the data when she died, Jangolie is a Burmese elephant.

I've edited the file now.

No worries - thanks for confirming Jangolie's ssp :)

And also, thanks for confirming Boris as a pure Western chimp - another ssp. to add to my photographed life list :D

Rob, this really is an outstanding body of work and a huge undertaking. Thank you for sharing it here.
