Oldest Chimpanzees in Zoos of the world

The oldest one I know is "Mama" in Burgers Zoo, she is 52,5 years old, since 1970 in Burgers Zoo.

I thought the oldest chimpanzee was about 60-70 years old.

Janie at Auckland Zoo is 53 and has been at the zoo for almost her entire life, arriving from London in 1956 (although she was wild caught). She's now the only chimp at Auckland.

Taronga has a few in their late 50's or early 60's.

:p

Cheeta the star of Tarzan films was said to be 75 in 2007. I don't know if he's still alive. There are those who doubt if this is the same animal however.

Thank you, Guys. But I think, over 70 years is more than unrealistic for chimpanzees. Is there any evidence for the age of 71 of the chimp at the Lion Country Safari ?Which are the oldest chimps in europe ?

I fail to see why it's an unrealistic age? They're pretty much the same as us and we're designed to live that long.

Humans only live that long though due to advances in modern medicine and whilst veterinary practises have also come on along way, it's surely not to the scale of human medicine?

I thought humans were "designed" (for want of a better word) to live for about 70 years? Unless it's some unreliable thing I heard or maybe a bible quote haunting me from primary school!

Here's from Lion Country Safari's website

Little Mama
One of the oldest chimps known, Little Mama was born in Africa around 1938. It is said that she was a performer in the Ice Capades when she was young. She is very people-oriented but is also an active member of her social group. You will often see her interacting with the younger chimps to whom she is an aunt figure. She is very small with grey hair on her chin and little hair on the top of her head and has a sweet personality. She sometimes likes to wear a piece of cloth or burlap bag on her back like a shawl.

Here is a link to the chimp ssp where it lists the ages of the 10 oldest chimps in the SSP.

I don't trust a Safariparks Website. Safariparks are not zoos;they are commercial , so they try everything to get money, so I don't belive this chimp is really 71 years old.

Weigl did not include the Lion Safari animal in his magnum opus on captive mammalian longevity. Many of theses ancient chimps are not the same animal.I can see where zebra duiker is coming from, apart from open range zoos in Australia most safari parks have their roots in circus and are subject to the hyperbole of that sphere especially in the early days.Check out Gerald Durrells viewpoint on safari parks in his book" the stationary ark "[1976] - not a lot has changed in 33years,these places deceive the public with an illusion of freedom but it is just zookeeping on the cheap.Profit comes first.

very interesting, as 'Mama' was one of the founder members of the Burger's colony, and features in the excellent Franz de Waal book 'Chimpanzee Politics' all about their social relationships. Mama was the original top-ranking female, along with her ally 'Gorilla'- though perhaps not nowadays in her advanced age? When I visited Burgers I tried to identify some of the chimpanzee 'characters' from the book but was pretty much unsuccessful though I think I recognised Mama. The only male I identified was 'Giambio'(he was born at Burger's) because of his unusual 'salt & pepper' silvery colouration. (the 3 adult male 'stars' of the book were already dead I think.)

Are any of the other founders of Burger's group still alive?

Not chimpanzee, but a relative:

The oldest bonobo in captivity is Margrit (born ~1952), at Frankfurt Zoo since 1959.

Honestly, if the highly regulated Chimp SSP say she is 71 I would tend to believe them.
