Oldest living representative of the species.

Okapi Dibaya was moved to Leipzig Zoo in 2005 or 2006 because he was not mating the females in Wuppertal Zoo with sucess, and he has died in the meantime. He was 18.

In today's Animal Park programme on BBC2, it was mentioned that Kaddu the tigress was 21. Is this a current (or even all-time) record for a tiger?

I know that she was alive and well earlier in the year as I actually emailed Longleat to ask, and they confirmed that she was in very good health. :)

I am a regular visitor to Twycross Zoo plus I work there voluntarily. We have 1 or 2 old animals here.

Gorilla - Joe was born in 1962 making him mid 40s at least. Also Bongo was born in 1965 making her one of UK's oldest female Gorillas.

Chimpanzee - Coco the Chocolate Chimp was born in 1965 so she is around 44 years old.

Orang-utan - Kibirah was born in 1977 so she will be 31 years old this year.

Bonobo - Diatou was also born in 1977 and has mother-reared many babies at the zoo. She will also turn 31 this year.

The zoo with the largest number of ancient old apes is probably Frankfurt -

gorilla male Matze, age 50 (and still fertile, his last offspring was born in spring 2007)
sumatran orang utan Charly, 50 (he also has a number of young kids)
bonobo female Magrit, age 57 somewhen in 2008!!! (still in good health and the dominant female- she is at least the 2nd oldest bonobo in captivity, maybe the oldest if the one who was a year older then she has died)

The oldest elephant in Germany is female Vilja in Stuttgart, she will turn 59 on an unkown date in 2008.

Oldest african elephant in captivity is female Ruaha from Basle, she will turn 57 in 2008.

Chester zoo's Sheba is 50, but she is onto her last set of teeth, so I don't know how much more we'll see of her............................

Adelaide zoo has a solitary greater flamingo which was brought with others to Australia as an adult in 1933 (75 years ago). It shares its enclosure with the zoo's sole Chilean flamingo, which was imported in 1948 and which is one of the only two in Aust. (The other is at Taronga.)

These are priceless birds - importation of flamingos (along with most other birds) has been forbidden for over 50 years.

I don't usually fuss about this but shouldn't this thread be in the General Forum, not UK zoos?- as its about the oldest animals in zoos worldwide.

Quite so, Pertinax; so why did you start it here on UK zoos (particularly since, to quote your opening statement, it deals with the oldest individual of a species "still living in captivity anywhere")?

Don't knock yourself!
It's an extremely interesting idea for a thread. I had a sneaking suspicion that you may have intended it as a record of British longevities, but we Aussies and Kiwis couldn't resist joining in. :)
