Pertinax - I never realised Brumas was female. She died on 17 May 1958 aged 9 years. So you must now be in your prime!

Yep, the press initially referred to the cub as male and ZSL only announced her true sex some months later. She died pretty young- her mate 'Ulla' and both( I think) her parents 'Ivy' & 'Mishka' outlived her. I can't remember if I was taken to see her as a cub- more likely the next year or so but I did see her a number of times.

However, I don't remember 'Jumbo' the elephant...

Snorkel the Hippo at Auckland Zoo is either already 50 or turning 50 later this year, I think if she lasts another 5 years or so she'll pushing the record...
