Olsen's Bird Garden.

Does anyone in Queensland (or anywhere else for that matter) know what happened to Olsen's Bird Garden at Currumbin on the Gold Coast?

This used to be a great little bird park with lots of pheasants, parrots etc. but last time I called in there it was weird -- sort of the zoological version of a ghost town.

The gate was wide open - anyone could walk right in - but there was no one there. About a third of the aviaries had birds in them, including the big walk-through aviary, but none of them had locks on them. The place was quite overgrown.

There was no sign of staff, but someone obviously feeds the birds that were there. While we were looking around, another family turned up, and the guy said that he had been there 12 months previously and the situation was exactly the same!

Anyone know what"s going on?

The Olsens sold the property about 5 years ago - don't know what happened after that. I quite liked it then but haven't visited for years.

Supposedly they were the Ashtons circus ones. I never saw them there and I don't know how long they were there.

Yeah, everyone knows that to succeed in S.E.Queensland you need some big, flash hybrid tigers or some ex-circus elephants!

Good point!

I like Brisbane very much - I have family there - and it seems unsatisfactory that Brisbane is the only large state capital without a proper, scientifically run mainstream zoo.

The only time my little grandsons see a "real" zoo is when they come down here to Sydney.

I do, the next owners were frauds and ran it into the ground, eventually they became bankrupt and the bank auctioned it off. Now it's a private farm
