Thank God! That poor elephant was stuck in a horrid exhibit.

I looked at the photos I took at Omaha in September (so I saw the old elephant before it died) and I wouldn't use such strong words. Sure, it is not Dallas Zoo's 'Giants of the Savannah' but still...

However, the zoo's strenght is in exhibition of odd small mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians; not in large mammals. If they can exhibit 20-30 small mammal species new to the collection for the money it costs to keep up the elephants, they should take the former option in my option.

I just think the exhibit is tiny. Tiny elephant exhibits are one of my pet peeve's. I agree that they should make some sort of small animal exhibit on that hill, or mabye just expand the black rhino exhibit.

Maybe she will be going to African elephant crossing? Nashville? NC? Indy? I would personally go with the international conservation center!

I don't think their exhibit is horrid by any means, but it was a negative in terms of the elephants and now elephant not being able to have much of a social life.

I applaud their decision to this and look forward to when they build a new elephant exhibit.

The exhibit wasn't terrible, but the tiny, bunker-like holding building (used a lot in Omaha's long cold winters) was/is pretty awful. Now they have a chance to do it right.

I was not aware Omaha did have black rhinos? I suppose you meant white rhinos (allthough to my mind these are elderly).

It seems Omaha Henry Doorly wishes to continue with elephants within a Savannah Grasslands theme and the white rhinos will get access to the old elephant yard. See local newspaper: Zoo’s lone elephant will leave - Omaha.com.
