Big news out of the zoo today, Dennis Pate intends to retire early next year. Has served as the President and CEO of the zoo for the 13 years overseeing even more massive changes to the zoo that Doc Simmons started nearly 30 years ago.

Will definitely be interesting to see who the zoo hires to replace Pate, as they are massive shoes to fill in the community. Interested to see the direction the zoo takes over the next decade.

Omaha's Zoo & Aquarium President and CEO Announces Retirement Plans
I’m sad to see him go, but he deserves a great retirement. He accomplished more during his 13 year tenure than many have in three times that amount. What other zoo has essentially completed an entire master plan’s worth of projects? Pate will go down as a legendary zoo director and I hope whoever replaces him has just as much ambition and drive to enhance one of the worlds greatest zoos.

Dennis Pate was previously director of Jacksonville Zoo, but he blossomed in Omaha with a massive amount of funding supporting his dreams. Whoever replaces him will have a clean slate, with the latest Master Plan now complete. The timeline below contains approximately $200 million in projects completed in a decade, on probably around 50 acres of the zoo. It is arguably the most unprecedented overhaul of an American zoo ever, with everything of a very high quality.

Timeline of major new projects under Dennis Pate:

2012 - $11 million – Scott Aquarium renovation and Conference Center addition

2016 - $73 million – African Grasslands (28 acres of zoo exhibits)

2016 - $14 million – Alaskan Waterpark

2017 - $27.5 million – Children's Adventure Trails (5-acre part of the zoo that includes an Amphitheater and a new Education Center)

2018 - $22 million - Asian Highlands: Phase One

2019 - Asian Highlands: Phase Two

2019 - $7 million - Glacier Bay Landing

2020 - $27.5 million - Owen Sea Lion Shores

2021 - $15 million - Stingray Beach ($6 million) + Simmons Aviary revamp ($2 million) + Gorilla Valley revamp ($7 million)

Went to see the baby elephants late last week and as I was driving by the north end of the zoo, I happened to look back at the north end of the zoo as it has been closed for the winter, but noticed that there was some construction going on. Almost looked like a new carousel building, but there has not been any press releases talking about this area. I checked the map online and it now shows the north end closed. Next time I go, I may try and get a picture of the area. It's definitely another one of those quality of life improvements that appear out of nowhere that has been the norm the last few years.

Alaska exhibit construction?

Alaska exhibit construction?
I wish, but I'm not positive this is the case.

If that was the case, I reckon there'd have been a big announcement about the matter. Especially with high-profile animals either returning to the zoo (polar bears) or coming to the zoo (grizzlies, lynx, sea otters).

I agree, I feel like this would have been a pretty big announcement as I'm sure Dr. Pate would love to add it to his long list of accomplishments here. This to me seems like it is something that will be ready for the spring season when this part of the zoo re-opens.

I was checking the zoo's website for updates to an email I received along with other patron members and benefactors that has announced another expecting elephant and noticed this on their news page regarding Spring Break announcements that the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Pavilion has finally re-opened.
  • Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom Pavilion has reopened and offers additional viewing of the elephants through a live video feed from the Elephant Family Quarters and an informational video, highlighting the birth of the calves and additional information about the herd.
This is the first time since the COVID closure that this building has been open. I hope to maybe take advantage of the nice weather here in Omaha to make a visit to see what they still have in here for species.

Made a quick loop around the zoo today taking in the beautiful weather here (as did a ton of folks, zoo was quite busy) and have a few updates.

Went into the Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom Pavilion for the first time since the building closed in March of 2020 and all but one of the large terrariums had animals in them, and 6 of the 12 terrariums on the north wall were occupied. The wetland exhibits in the center were mostly occupied save for one of the four sections. However, there were not any small terrariums that were spaced throughout the room like there used to. If you are curious in the species that were signed and on exhibit, go to the Omaha's Zoo Species List compiled by @birdsandbats

A couple of other updates:

In the Lied Jungle, the Pygmy Hippo exhibit looks to be getting its water filtration system updated as well.

IMG_6523.JPG

In the Desert Dome, the Cape Cobra exhibit has been split in two and one of the halves now holds a Zebra Spitting Cobra. The touch ups on the Dwarf Mongoose exhibit has been completed and there are now sand dig pits along the upper shelf of the exhibit.

IMG_6524.JPG

The Central Canyon area pond also looks much cleaner with the new filtration installed.

IMG_6525.JPG

At the end of the Africa/Australia reptile cave, a second Perentie has been added so hopefully this results in some chance of breeding this species!

IMG_6528.JPG

A rather interesting development near the end of the Desert Dome is that the old Swift Fox exhibit has been repurposed into an additional Black & Rufous Elephant Shrew exhibit. There weren't any elephant shrews on exhibit so this may be pretty recent and haven't introduced them to this space yet.

Down in Kingdoms of the Night, there has been some additional "land" area built inside of the Spectacled Caiman exhibit. About a third of this habitat is now "land" in the sense that this is a platform raised above the water level.

IMG_6531.JPG

Over in Asian Highlands, the new Indian Rhino/Pere David's Deer viewing area has been opened and offers some super close viewing of the animals in the habitat.

IMG_6537.JPG

The north part of the zoo is still closed at the moment but you can see the new Carousel Building being constructed, not sure how much of the little pond with the seaplane has been impacted as the new location is in about that area.

IMG_6536.JPG

An update on the two elephant calves, they were both outside enjoying the nice weather with Eugenia happily running around and Sonny was trying to pick up a log that is about his size.

IMG_6542.JPG

And finally, the biggest news is that the former Cat Complex demolition has been rapid in the last month. Here are some photos of the remains. It's pretty shocking to see a building I had been visiting for the better part of 30 years reduced to rubble, but excited for what's to come here. There has not been a formal announcement of what was to be here, except the most recent master plan (which has been stated as completed) showed this area as an Equitorial Africa section.

And with that, those were my major observations from today's visit!

Thanks for the update @MGolka! A bit disappointed about the Swift Foxes being phased out for a species already on exhibit elsewhere in the zoo, but am very pleased to hear the Cat Complex has finally been rid demolished!

Has anyone ever seen the goral in the exhibit with the takin? As a local and frequent visitor, I have NEVER seen the goral on exhibit. Do they not mix well with the takin? Does the zoo still have them?

Now that you mention it, I did not see it on either of my visits last year and there are no photos of it in the gallery.
