With two elephants pregnant and due this year, it is exciting to see how far that Omaha’s breeding program is going. These two along with Eugenia and Sonny will be great for the AZA’s elephant population.

Two elephants? I thought it was just the one that was still pregnant for this year.
Yep, it’s two! Lolly is due February/March and Jayei is due in August.

The two elephants being born this year will bring the herd’s total to 10 individuals. I think that’s the most elephants at any AZA facility in North America right now. I know Disney’s Animal Kingdom has 9 though.
Was this officially confirmed by the zoo? Trusting but verifying.
Gretchen, a cheetah, got out of her enclosure this afternoon, but didn't breach the secondary fencing. Her mom and sisters didn't follow her. She walked back to her night enclosure with her keepers. Typical cat, gets loose and then changes her mind

On March 2nd, the zoo announced that a (1.0) African bush elephant was born on this morning to female Lolly.

Are you sure that Omaha Zoo has bush elephants?
Yes, the only Forest Elephants in captivity are in Africa and Japan. Any African elephants outside of those regions are Bush Elephants.

Speaking of this elephant birth. I realized that the average of of 4 elephant births in US every 2 years has been exceeded greatly. Last year 4 Asian and 2 African elephants were born. This year there has already been 1 Asian and 1 African born with a 2nd African due in summer. 2022 & 2023 are great years for elephant conservation.

Great news to see Lolly’s given birth successfully; especially as this male was her first.
Hopefully we can expect Jayei’s calf soon too. It’s due the end of this summer (August), so there’s not long to go.
Four calves in a little more than a year is awesome for Omaha. Congratulations to them. Callee seems to be getting the job done.
Eight perenties have hatched between January 14 and February 20. Omaha is now the 2nd AZA-accredited facility to breed the species, after Dallas.
This news is from 2021, but it somehow escaped mention on here and is important enough - and terrifying enough! - that I think it should be included.
In July of 2021, an overnight camper who was part of a group staying in the aquarium woke up to a wild little brown bat flying around her. Upon investigation staff found 7 bats in the building, including one that tested positive for rabies. I haven't seen any follow up mention of humans being rabid, but around 200 campers and staff members were recommended to get rabies shots (with the zoo paying for them, along with giving full refunds to everyone). Nebraska zoo says 200 people possibly exposed to rabid bat

Zola gave birth to a healthy female calf on Sunday, March 19th: Giraffe Calf Born at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium
“Despite a normal delivery, Zola did not show the expected level of maternal care towards her calf. Out veterinary and animal care teams have stepped in and are providing around-the-clock care for the calf.”
and now another one of their African Elephants is pregnant and due early 2024. Omma, a 12 year old African Elephant is pregnant with her first calf. The father of her calf is Callee.
