Has anyone seen the male onager at San Diego Wild Animal Park?

I have tried to catch a glimpse but the keeper said he hides really good.

I think it can go both ways San Diego Safari Park or San Diego Wild Animal Park. I guess I can say Safari Park if that is what the caravan tour is called. Have you ever been? If yes than did you see the Onager? :)

I saw him last year when he was still on exhibit. They keep him off exhibit now in an exhibit that you pass when you go up to the zipline. A tour guide told me this.

Why do they not get the conservation attention they deserve?
Onager are critically endangered with 350-500 individuals in the wild.
More endangered than black rhino, giant panda, Przewalski horse, lowland gorilla et cetera et cetera ????? :(

:(

Because the general public considers them to be donkeys which have an undeserved but notoriously bad reputation. They are considered boring and are often not presented in an interesting way. I think it is possible to put the Onager and its relatives in a much better light and I wish some of the education departments would pick up the challenge. These animals are amazing survivors in harsh environments, capable of doing many amazing things. They have a long and fascinating history and of course they are all highly endangered !

I'm not an expert on this species but I think it has to do with getting it. It is not like you can go out in the wild and capture some Onager, Right? Also American Bison aren't the most interesting of animals and zoos and farms saved them. This could also go with the Californian Condor. Most common zoo guest would think there pretty ugly looking. Don't get me wrong I love Cali Condors. :)

What do you mean hard to get? Canyon Colorado Equid Sanctuary kept tons of them. When the owner passed away - R.I.P. - the collection was disbanded. All 50-60 onagers were sold out to private buyers and most males ended up at the knackers!

It is more to do with IMO - quite possibly - a declared lack of interest on the part the zoo to invest in onagers and perhaps some sort of *** political correctness. ;)
