One animal to improve a collection.

To choose one species for each of my favourite five zoos per the other thread:-

Welsh Mountain - a flock of Jendaya Conures.

Flamingo Land - African Elephant.

Sewerby - Double Yellow-headed Amazon.

Paradise Park - Lear's Macaw.

Paignton - Kagu (fresh from the other current desired species thread).

Dudley could really benefit from something that could exploit their hilly terrain. I'd go with Takin as well. Mishmi would be the most practical but since this is largely hypothetical I'd go with Golden takin.

Chester would be great if they got a Tasmanian Devil, it's hard to believe our best zoo doesn't have a single marsupial, an a few Devils would more than balance out the lack of anything else.

If we're talking about individual animals I'd love it if WMSP had another elephant, and if Anne and Duchess had some company, but thanks to this site I've learned how challenging it is to integrate elephants and I know how impractical that is.

Maybe manatees at London, instead of my earlier thought of rhinos? :)

Africa alive - elephants/leopards

banham zoo- Indian rhinos / bears

colchester zoo - saltwater crocodiles

Marwell zoo - Asian lions

twycross zoo - Sumatran tigers

some i believe are possible so i do have my hopes up;):D

Colchester - Ratel

Chester - Brown Hyena( or how about Common Hippo)

London - Tasmanian Devil

Marwell - Lions or a bear species or maybe orangs

Banham - Indian rhino

Africa Alive - Elephant/hippo/ leopard ( bring back hyena?)

Cotswold - a great ape or bear

Whipsnade- has to be polar bear

Edinburgh - nothing, just keep all those cats!

There is, of course, no collection which would not be improved by the arrival of binturong.

Failing that, gorilla would be nice at Chester.

I don't see how pandas would be good for London Zoo. Sure they get bragging points for a while, but the zoo seems to be drawing in huge crowds anyway. I can't see them getting more than they already do.

They will be expensive and if the pandas don't start pumping out babies immediately London will become the butt of jokes.

Assuming that space was available etc
PWP(Broxbourne) Chimps
London Zoo Gibbons
Whipsnade - Polar bear
Shepreth - Zebra
Woburn - Hippo
Monkey World - gorilla
Isle of Wight Zoo - black bear

These are what i've visited recently and from memory

Edinburgh - Orang Utans

Funny how they were the first to breed them in the UK- though not successfully, and now don't have them at all. Mind you, their later quarters were pretty abysmal- an example of where the oldest housing- in the old Ape House- was probably superior to what came later.

But it would be good to see them return- in decent accomodation that is, but for Orangs that's expensive.

Bristol - Tarsier
Wild Place - Giraffe/Black Rhino/Eastern Bongo
Paignton - Goodfellow's Tree Kangaroo
Dudley - Mishmi Takin
BNC - Tayra
Living Coasts - Sea Otter
Newquay - Sifaka (Any species)
London - Amur Leopard
Edinburgh - Northern Fur Seal
Shaldon - Narrow-striped Mongoose
Paradise Park - Lear's Macaw
Noah's Ark - Evolutionary Scientist! :p
Twycross - Sumatran Tigers and Asiatic Lions
Chester - Yellow-footed Rock Wallaby or any marsupial
Whipsnade - Black Rhino
Exmoor - Marbled Polecat
RSCC - Aye-Aye
Port Lympne - Indian Rhino
HWP - Himalayan Black or European Brown Bear
WMSP - Drills or King Colobus
Howletts - Asiatic Golden Cat
YWP - Western Lowland Gorillas
Woburn - Hippo (either species)
Marwell - African Lions
Africa Alive - Ratel
Banham - Jaguarundi
Hamerton - Caracal
Thrigby - Sunda Gharial (to replace American alligators) and Francois Langur
Amazona - Bush Dog or Tayra
Wingham - African Hunting Dog
Durrell - Pygmy Hog

I know I'm late to the party but I forgot about this thread and I was determined to throw in my thoughts! :D

My suggetions...

Marwell - Black Rhino

Chester - Philippine Porcupine (unlikely ;) but they are in Europe and would fit into the theme of Islands)

Port Lympne - Indian Rhino

Bristol - Goodfellows Tree Kangaroo

Hamerton - Palawan Leopard Cats

Banham - Sifaka

Newquay - Binturong (ideally Palawan)

Paignton - Red Backed Bearded Saki (maybe as a replacement for the Swamp Monkey, once they die out?)

Woburn - White Tailed Gnu :)

Red Backed Sakis. These are great. Just saw some at Colchester. ;)They are similar size to the Swamp Monkeys and would fit in Paignton's little Swamp Monkey House and Island nicely if the latter did leave.

White-tailed Gnu. It would be nice to see a decent-sized herd galloping around at one of the Safari Parks- or alternatively Whipsnade(which used to have them). Currently Newquay is the only UK 'herd' and it is very small(5) and in a fairly enclosed paddock.

Edinburgh: Dama gazelle
London ZSL: Tayra
Chester: Giant panda
Twycross: Olive baboon
Whipsnade: Sun bear
Colchester: Giant panda

I think we're meant to be selecting taxa to improve the collections, rather than to attempt to bring them down :p

I'd like to see Tayra at London, however - not sure where they would best be placed though.

South Lakes are missing Meerkats, in my opinion.

;)

South Lakes are missing quite a few animals..... ringtailed lemur, capuchin monkey, brown-nosed coati, orange-rumped agouti, various parrots and black-tailed prairie dog for a start.

Its also probably the one species of animal that Chester Will never bring into the collection!

Other than Clouded Leopard, much to the dismay of karoocheetah ;)
