Open air Coatis

Chester, Marwell and London, certainly. Racking my brains 'cos I'm sure there's more.

Last time I went, I seem to remember bicton college having such an enclosure as well as a netted one.

South Lakes used to have them behind nothing but an Electric fence, they don`t keep the species any more but people keep claiming to see them living in the wild in the local area!

Not the UK, I know, but Melbourne Zoo's coati enclosure would answer to that description as well.

Do not go to Chester to look at their enclosure - it has been demolished and replaced by a lawn . The enclosure at Marwell is similar in concept and nearer to you .

Yes - I should have said that although the current coati exhibit is also open-topped, it is shared with bears, so is not exactly a typical coati exhibit!

And worth pointing out that unlike the old enclosure, which provided excellent viewing, in their new home the coatis are often impossible to see.

Well I finally built the Coati enclosure! Went for an electric barrier that I have seen used in a few places = no walls or high fences just a standoff barrier to look over.
Lots of claiming and space for more. Would have liked a more natural look but twenty five feet high on a windy site would be a nightmare with randomly sized tree branches hopefully we can grow some real stuff, if the Coati’s let us.
I’ve seen better and I’ve seen worse but as I think it’s a lot better than there old “Hum... temporary” home and again in my humble opinion a lot better than a good number of UK zoos I will be interested to see what comments end up on this site.

Birmingham Nature Centre there Coati enclosure has just glass panels around about 7ft high and nothing else (except over the top of the night quarters which does have electric wiring)

Can you tell me whereabouts in the zoo you have built the new coati enclosure please?

That sounds great but you wouldn’t believe the moaning everybody dose about cleaning the glass we have all ready.

If I've read it right! Durrell have Coatis with the Spectacled bears and Otters in "First Impressions" open air :)

Hi mhale The Coatis are now in their proper place between the big cats and the 5to10s play area, down past the Tapirs. The field has been empty for some time but is now coming to life with the new kiosk, picnic tables and the play diggers it balances the dwell time at that end of the Farm.
