Orang utans in Europe

Any idea, who are/is the one(s) from Chester?

Most likely 'Budi' and/or 'Utara' as this pair of offspring are 8 years old now, but very closely related (they are 'more' than half-siblings as their mothers are sisters).

Amneville- afaik they only have three Orangs- Julitta & her daughter Putri from Jersey and a young unrelated male. Maybe one of the two females is moving?

Basel Zoo is going to receive six young Pongo abelii in september - 3,3 from Chester (Zoo), Berlin (Zoo), Amneville (Zoo) and Leipzig (Zoo).

Any idea, who are/is the one(s) from Chester?

I think that from Leipzig they had three born in 2009 however, I still feel this is rather young. I think that 'Raaja' one of the last offspring from 'Walter' at Leipzig may move as she is a similar age to Utara and Budi. I think 'Kila' or 'Maja' may also move. I think it maybe Maja as she is nearly five and her father is 'Bimbo' the current male at Leipzig. Bimbo was born at Duisburg to Nony and Major both of whom were wildcaught.

The Orangs from Chester are (I think) 'Utara' and 'Budi'. They are both nearly eight and probably need moving on soon to avoid;

A. Utara inbreeding with her father 'Puluh' in a few years time.

B. Budi will start fighting/challenging 'Puluh' soon/in a few years.

Amneville has 2 males, "Duapulu" (15) from Munich and "Vendel" (12) from Budapest".

I think, one of these two males will travel to Basel, in addition to "Bagus" (10) from Berlin and "Budi" (8) from Chester.

I am not sure about the three females, maybe "Utara" (8) from Chester, "Kila" (12) and "Maja" (5) from Leipzig, "Satu" (6) from Berlin or "Putri" (7) from Amneville.

What about stopping Budi breeding with his mother, aunt or sister! Budi would probably be fine with Puluh for quite some time, Puluh tolerated Padang. Although maybe, like me he's getting grumpier with age!

Isn't it a bit odd to send 2 such closely related animals as Budi & Utara to the same zoo?

Yes, unless they are making up separate groups, but otherwise maybe its either just one or the other of them, or if both, the move for one would only be temporary followed by another move elsewhere in Europe.

Didn't know Amneville have two males now- I think you are right that one will leave.

I should have thought Amneville would want to keep both Julitta and Putri - unless there is some problem.

I imagine with 3 males at Basel that the Zoo/studbook will later move at least one of them elsewhere as they mature.

Major dies

From the La Boissiere(France) thread- old male 'Major' has died at La Boissiere. He was approx. fifty years old and fathered 16 offspring. See that thread for more details..

Prague's Sumatran Mawar (ex-Jersey) is pregnant, due in March. First offspring for Padang (ex Chester) but not Mawar.

Worth noting that the only two UK lines of Sumatran Orangutans in the UK-at Chester and Jersey, have now become combined at Prague.

I see this thread hasn't been updated for a while. Two recent births that I know about:

Jersey Durrell: 1.0 'Jantho' to Dagu x Anette, 1 April 2013 (Sumatran)

Paignton: 0.1 to Demo x Mali, 11 April 2013 (Bornean)
