Taronga Zoo orangutan death

it is a shame, i saw it in the newsagents, and got a cpoy this morn, it ly is ridicualus, and all those deaths areccountable for. it is a shame, let the animals and there keepers be in peace, it hasnt even reported the good stuff, what about breeding records! the past 24 months have had many signi9ficant births, like 3 rhino i think

Yep, Kluet packed his bags and went to Adelaide on/around 7th May, now Judy's passed on leaving Jantan and Willow. Could do with a few more really!

If they were living in a Western European zoo, these two would almost certainly be sent to an East European Zoo so the zoo could concentrate on purebreds. I don't really condone that practise but it has happened many times over. I guess at Taronga they will just have to stay where they are.

um, maybe this should be a new thread, but i saw this as a pretty small thing. I visited the gallery on this site and saw the picture of the taronga lions posted by Jay and noticed that Bruiser and Johari were on display together as adults. I was wondering if anyone knew how the zoo managed to display the lions together? especially since adult males outcast their male offspring. I was at the zoo for work experience back in 2005 and the keepers were a bit worried over what would happen between the males when Johari reached sexual maturity. my guess is that bruiser is just a tolerant father?

i was talking to a keeper the other day and at the moment they have both the girls on contraceptives to stop them coming in to heat. hopefuly this will stop the males fighting as there is no competition for mates. the plan is to move johari and his sister as soon as the stud booker keeper tells them were to go which i would assume would have to be soon.

When I took those photos there was definately no animosity between father and son, they were quite friend;y to each other, rubbing up against each other, sitting together etc.

and as far as i know they are still together. i think the zoo is closely studying the situation because depending on the outcome new husbandry guidelines could be considered for this species-ie, if taronga proves it is actually possible to keep a male lion with his male offspring in a compatable way.
