I didn't see a thread referring to this article before so it might be of interest- it basically says Malaysia, in an effort to prove that their palm oil production is sustainable will be giving orangs to countries that buy the product: Malaysia plans to give orangutans to countries that buy palm oil Malaysia plans to give orangutans to countries that buy palm oil

First we had 'Giant Panda diplomacy' and now it's possible that Orangutans will be offered to zoos around the world. Bizarre. I'm not sure how well that will succeed...

I suppose there won't be a reason for most zoos to accept since I believe (I could be wrong) the captive orang puoplation is fairly strong.

I don't believe it says in the article.

I assume this would have to be a system very different from China's, given no zoo is going to pay ridiculous prices to rent an orangutan from Malaysia when they could easily get them through other means.

@Rohin Fair enough, but in either case, it will be interesting to see how this plays out; especially with the potential of increasing genetic diversity for the existing captive populations.
