Orangutans in Europe 2023

The 23-year-old orangutan male Amos at Apenheul will move to Zoo Osnabrück in a few weeks. On the same day, a new breeding male from Cologne Zoo will come to Apenheul. This is 16-year-old Budi. He is a full brother of Amos.

At Apenheul, the orangutans have the opportunity to choose which other orangutans they want to spend the day with. Unfortunately for Amos, he is no longer so popular, so the females no longer come to spend time with him.

Do you know what's the plans with Damai who is momently in Osnabrück? And who will replace Budi in Köln? I live in the near of these German zoos.

My guess would be a trade between the three zoos with Damai ending up in Cologne. It's only a guess though, I don't know more than the article says.

That would be the best for him. But there are few zoos without breeding male at the moment so there is still a bit of chance he will go to another zoo.

The male orangutan on this picture definitely is Damai, who still is in Osnabrück until today. I also have heard the rumors that Apenheul cancelled the transfers. Not sure if it's true since they were the ones who announced the transfer and they still have the news about it on their website.

Budi is still in Köln. It looks Apenheul cancelled the swap between Amos, Budi and Damai. Does anybody know what happened?

Apenheul mentioned in the comments of a Facebook post that Amos' move has been delayed.

Hi, there is some controversy around this baby. His development is very slow. Zoo doesn’t acknowledge, but he is closing in on 10 months and barely sits up…spends most of his time on his back waiting for his mother.

does anyone know about this?
I don't know if the baby has a problem or it is the mother's rather unusual way of rearing him, not carrying him close to her body as per normal all the time and leaving him lying seperately. But I guess she feeds him normally etc otherwise they would have removed him by now.

Ferda, the old hybrid male in Usti nad Laben zoo has died (euthanased). He was the oldest male in Europe and 2nd in the world. Born in Frankfurt in 1969. Father 'Moritz'(Sumatran). Mother 'Lady' or 'Bridgette'.(Bornean).

Is the mother a firsttime mother? Or has she raised youngsters before? If so yes, how did she display behavior?

She does feed him. But he was alarmingly thin in first 2 months. Now, he has no teeth and huge swellings around his groin…maybe hernias from being hauled up and down so quickly by his mum-

She is. She tried to carry him on his back when he was about 2 months. He slid off and she gave up…she was separated from her own mum when she was a baby…well under a year…might have missed something crucial at that point.

I thought I saw this- the swellings- but wasn't sure if I was seeing things. He has problems it seems. I'm surprised they still have them on display and have not taken him away from her.
