Orangutans in Europe 2024

Bornean Orangutan Awan has left Monkey World in Dorset and has moved to Wingham Wildlife Park in Kent, where she has been paired with Jin (who also came from Monkey World and was raised with Awan by his late mother Hsiao-Quai after Awan's mother Hsiao-Lan lacked maternal instincts). Jin's previous mate Molly is now living with Wingham's other male orangutan Belayan.

Bornean Orangutan Murjur, who lives at Dublin Zoo, gave birth to a son (fathered by the late Sibu) on 31st July. Despite showing good maternal care towards the baby, Murjur was not putting him in the right position to feed him. Because of this, Dublin Zoo are currently caring for him before sending him to be cared for at Monkey World in Dorset, who take in young orangutans who are orphaned or not able to be cared for by their mothers.

I also got the news from a Hungarian friend of mine. Guru in Sosto Zoo died. There are only two orangutans left in Budapest Zoo too. He was adoptive parent of one of the oragutans in Budapest Zoo.

In Budapest I would imagine that the two daughters, Moira and Lone, left if there are only two by now. Would be interesting to know where they ended up (if it was them)

Sadly two of them died during the summer. Two females left.

19-year-old Sumatran orangutan male Gempa at Pairi Daiza has died. He had been ill for several weeks, with his health deteriorating despite treatments.

Investigations showed that an infection with staphylococcus caused disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). This complication caused severe damage in his body resulting in internal bleeding, motor impairment and organ failure, leaving no hope of recovery. It was therefore decided to euthanise him.

According to this article, 28-year-old male Chuij and 14-year-old female Moira died last summer. The cause of death is under investigation.

I've seen Gempa a couple of times at Paira Daiza. He was not as well know publicity-wise as the other Sumatran male there, Ujian, nor quite as impressive to look at. But its sad news nonetheless. Presumably there are plenty of males available to fill his place.

Does anybody have information about Orangutan Oceh from Zürich Zoo? I didn't see her in Awangs group.

They could (almost) replace him with Berani from the other group who is now 8 years old. He would no doubt be fertile now despite being a long way from mature. Unlike with Gorillas, he has no role to play as 'leader' or anything so being so young is largely immaterial. But I don't know if he would be suitable from the genetics.

Bornean orangutan Niah from Münster moved to Zoo Bassin d'Arcachon.

This is a surprise. Niah is 11, her parents are dead and she could have mated with the new male Ramon. Münster only has one big enclosure with no real possibility to split groups, so it's certainly not a modern structure, but so far they didn't seem to have issues with her. In fact the two remaining females, Temmy and Mandi, had issues, at least when the old male was still around.

Mr Miyagi became the main male of Sóstó Zoo after the death of Guru. He lives with both females by swapping them time by time.
