Orangutans in Europe

ZOOM Gelsenkirchen have announced the death of Sumatran female, Elsi at the age of 59.
"On Monday, January 23, 2017, Orang-Utan Elsi died in the ZOOM adventure world at an advanced age. With her 59 years she was the oldest Orangutan, which is currently living in Europe. This age is exceptional for people in zoos and is clearly above life expectancy in nature.
Elsi had already retired for several days and had not eaten and drunk any more. After her general condition had further worsened, she had to be euthanized after an acute weakness.
The autopsy did not reveal any abnormalities, the organs were altered according to age.
Elsi has been living in Gelsenkirchen since December 2009, and she came with her family from Basel Zoo to the Ruhr area. It was estimated to have been born in 1958, and still came as a game to Basel in 1961. There she had four young animals, the last 1987 together with Orangutan Schubbi as father.
Elsi had an extremely lovable character. In spite of her high age, she was eager to participate in medical training and work on the part of the keepers, whom she painfully missed. It will be a good memory of all employees of the ZOOM World of Experience."

The baby orangutan born at Usti on the 14th of December 2016 passed away on the 11th of February :(

Orangs seem to have got lost in my research like Bangghi from Rio Safari Elche who was moved on after he started fighting with his father, Nakal but I do hope to find information like this out soon.
Spoke to a keeper at Rio Safari Elche and he said that Bangghi is now in Paris, so presumably Jardin des Plantes.

ZOOM Gelsenkirchen have announced the death of Sumatran female, Elsi at the age of 59.
I remember Elsi at Basel Zoo. In the early years she was sometimes presented in a teaparty-type situation with the young Gorillas Goma & Pepe( there is an old postcard of this). Her first partner was a Bornean male(Nico?) and I think she may have had at least one hybrid offspring before they later established a pure Sumatran group.

I was at a postcard fair yesterday and purchased an old postcard (1950s?) from Rotterdam (Blijdorp) Zoo depicting a "tea-party" featuring the orang-utan "Kobus" and the gorilla "Sophie".

Pairi Daiza has posted on there Facebook page that they are welcoming the Sumatran Orangutans from Heidelberg. This will consist of females Puan and Sari and male Ujian with young male (11 months) Berani.

"We present you Berani, a charming little orang-utan of 11 months. The Duck is going to happen in early April to Pairi Daiza, with her parents and another female, from Heidelberg Zoo (Germany). The whole family will settle in the new temple of flowers and will benefit from the pens outside and inside of more than 1.400 square meters. He's cute, no, the kid?

From the sounds of it, this will see Heidelberg going out of orangs unless they have plans to get some more.

A Bornean Orangutan was born at Chester Zoo this morning to 3rd time mum Sarikei and 1st time dad Willie. First born at Chester for 9 years.

Puan the Sumatran Orangutan from Tierpark Heidelberg has sadly passed away days away from her move Pairi Diaza. Her death is due to a lung problem.

Vienna Zoo has announced that female Bornean Sol is pregnant:
"Hardly to be overlooked: The orangutan female Sol in the animal garden Schönbrunn is pregnant. Now it's a good idea to say that everything is going well. For the animal garden it would be the first offspring of these endangered human beings since the young Maya in 2004. "Regular ultrasound examinations by our veterinarians confirm that the small is well developed and the heart stroke is strong," explains animal garden director Dagmar Schratter. The fetus is already fully developed, now it only has to grow. The sex was not yet recognizable.

At the end of July Sol and the male Vladimir mated. The gestation period for orangutans is around nine months. Therefore, birth should be expected in March. Schratter: "Sol is doing well. She is not really different, except she is a nap during the day. "The Orangutan female was born on 4 June 1996 in the Borås Zoo in Sweden. When the ORANG.erie was opened in the Tiergarten in 2009, Sol came to Vienna and moved into the new Orangutan enclosure. For them it would be the first rearing of a young animal. In 2012, she had a stillbirth, which is often the case with first-born babies."

Sol gave birth today but sadly the baby has died again like her previous one in 2012. The orangutan house at Schönbrunn will be closed tomorrow. The last sucssesful birth at Vienna was in 2004.

Don't know how I missed this but, on the 4th of March at Basel, a baby male Sumatran Orangutan was born to mother Kila. They have named the baby 'Omback'. The father is unknown and a DNA test will have to be done to find out whether the father is Bagus (15), Vendel (17) or Budi (13).

Are these males all still displayed together? The implication is they were at least until recently if there is a paternity test needed.
