Orangutans in Europe

Pairi Daiza has posted on there Facebook page that they are welcoming the Sumatran Orangutans from Heidelberg. This will consist of females Puan and Sari and male Ujian with young male (11 months) Berani.

"We present you Berani, a charming little orang-utan of 11 months. The Duck is going to happen in early April to Pairi Daiza, with her parents and another female, from Heidelberg Zoo (Germany). The whole family will settle in the new temple of flowers and will benefit from the pens outside and inside of more than 1.400 square meters. He's cute, no, the kid?

"

From the sounds of it, this will see Heidelberg going out of orangs unless they have plans to get some more.
Sari, Berani and Ujian are now on-show in the exhibit called "The Temple of Flowers"
Here is some more information from this article, with some photos of exhibit: ZOO Logisch: Een nieuwe familie orang-oetans in Pairi Daiza

Begin this week month, Ujian (22 years old), Sari (13 years) and their 1 year old baby Berani from the German Zoo Heidelberg in Pairi Daiza. They were accompanied by their German caregivers and first discovered their new territory. Ujian, Sari and Berani are visible to the public in the Temple of Fleurs from today.
Berani, The Big Suprise
After years of platonic society between Ujian and Sari, it was initially concluded that the origin of an intimate relationship between both oranges was no longer dealt with. The organization of relocation and the search for new live animals for the animals had already begun, when everyone's surprise, in March 2016, showed the little Berani.
Berani, like many little orangutans, has hung his first life months to his mother. He is now beginning to lead his own life quietly. Just like his mother, a very independent female, Berani is also leaving for adventure only more often.
Ujian, beloved for his intelligence and wisdom, now starts to show a little more interest in the very cuddly little one.
The family orangutans counted and second female, Puan. Unfortunately, Puan has not been able to experience the trip. Puan was 28 years old and led to chronic lung disease, died a few hours before leaving. Despite all efforts, her caregivers and veterinarians could not save Puan. Pairi Daiza salutes the professionalism and love that accompanied the German colleagues Puan for years and last.
A Temple for the Family
Pairi Daiza is also famous for its temples and stays, built with respect for local traditions and with the help of local craftsmen.
This season you can enter the 'Temple of Fleurs', a Jaïn temple departing for the new family orangutans.
For Ujian, Sari and Berani, a grand temple was built from tons of white marble where 800 sculptors in India worked for six months. It took another six months for the placement in Pairi Daiza. The residence of the new residents has more than 1,400 square meters of indoor and outdoor space and offers climbing possibilities up to 8m high
European Endangered Species Programme
Ujian, Sari and Berani, as well as Sinta and Gempa (a pair of orangutans who moved in to Pairi Daiza in 2016) are part of the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria European Epidemic Breeding Program (EAZA)

A third baby Sumatran in 6 months was born at Hellabrunn to mum Sitti and dad Bruno on April the 22nd. It is thought to be a female. This brings the Hellabrunn group up to 9.

Another one I seem to have missed; Vedjar the Hybrid Orangutan at Wuppertal was PTS aged 43 on the 22nd of February due to some age related health issues

Our Orang Utan-male Vedjar is dead. The animal had in the past few weeks, major health problems. Vedjar after it in the last few days getting worse and worse, he had to be euthanized the day before yesterday, finally. The Green Gatorade is losing an animal personality, the many guests who have been known and loved.
Vedjar lived since the opening of the ape house 1978 together with his companions of chemo and Jackowina in Wuppertal. He was born on 8. July 1973 at the zoo Basel. At the age of 43 he reached a for orang utans high age, there are only a few older peers in zoos. Outdoor life expectancy is 30-40 years. With its own offspring Vedjar had bit of luck, last died in 2010. His 1989 born daughter sanda an appendicitis. The two females Chemo and Jakowina in the appendix now live on alone for the time being.
Vedjar's Health problems over the past few weeks have been especially in the age reduction due to his physical condition. In the last two weeks he showed neurological failures by paralysis. A conservative drug therapy, unfortunately, was not successful, an operation would be due to the high age and experience has shown that a poor prognosis made no sense. With a heavy heart was therefore taken the decision, by his suffering Vedjar to proceeds.

Loren the Bornean from Moscow born in 2015 has moved to Monkey World after being reared by keepers at Moscow Zoo. This is the second of Lichana's 3 daughters that has been sent to Monkey World with Joly (now at Elche) being the other. She has found an 'adoptive' mum in RoRo who herself has had her 2 daughters hand-raised (Hsiao-Ning and Dinda, both now at Rostock)

On the 27th of April, female Sumatran Orang-utan at Dortmund, Suma went into labour. After some complications the next day, they chose to perform a C-Section on Suma. Sadly, the baby (Which was a male) did not survive the procedure and died.

A Male Bornean Orang-utan was born at ZooParc de Beauval on the 6th of May to mum 'Janah' and dad 'Muda'. The baby has been named 'Kayan'

Time for an update :) With recent orangutan transfers, deaths and births I decided its time for an update on the Orangutans in Europe. You may notice under Monde Sauvage I have added another male called Mokko because I assumed he died but read into some information on him and turns out he never matured (Mother had an X-ray whilst pregnant) so can be and I kept with other male Masala. Also, I have added Lola at ZooPark Udmurtii; Very little is known about her and although she looks like a Bornean from photos I'm not ruling out anything. Enjoy :)

TILDA at Cologne died in spring this year.

Leipzig keeps 4,5 - MARTOK, RAJAs first son is the 9th born this year.

Hsiao-Ning at Rostock is thought to be pregnant and due at the end of August :) If successful, it will be the first off-spring for both of the parents

"Good news from the darwineum
The Zookeeper in darwineum are full of anticipation and confidence. That's a good reason. The belly of the 13-Year-old orangutan-Lady Hsiao-Ning is impossible to ignore. In fact, in darwineum brewing after the birth of Surya on 28. June 2013 offspring at the apes. If everything is still so positive, will be our "Rostock young" Sabah at the end of August for the first time dad."

Never mind thought; Hsiao-Ning IS pregnant. In this article it says that Miri has been moved in with other group of Ejde, Sunda and Surya due to 'tensions'. This now means the groups consist of Sabas, Hsiao-Ning and Dinda in the Darwineum and Ejde,Sunda,Miri and Surya in the other enclosure.
Rostocker Zoo erwartet Nachwuchs bei den Orang Utans
The Darwineum, so to speak, began his own life, which could soon be crowned with his own new family member.Hsiao-Nings also belongs to the lively group of the 13-year-old sister Dinda (10), the pregnant Hsiao-Ning (13) and Miri (13). Due to tensions in the group of Sabas the orangutan female Miri was transferred to the group around Saba's father Ejde (36) after a coordination with the coordinator of the European Conservation Program. Dort leben noch Sunda (40) und ihr gemeinsames Kind Surya (fast 4). Sunda (40) and her child Surya (almost 4) still live there. Der erfahrene Orang-Utan-Mann und bereits dreifache Vater zeigte nach anfänglicher Ignoranz bereits kurze Zeit später Interesse an der quirligen Miri. The experienced Orangutan man and his threefather father, after initial ignorance, showed a short time later interest in the lively Miri.

Are these males all still displayed together? The implication is they were at least until recently if there is a paternity test needed.
Sorry for not replying; No, the males are no longer displayed together and the Omback and Kila are currently living with Bagus. I believe it is a similar system as at Apenhuel with the females are switched between the males.

A Bornean Orang-utan was born at Krefeld on the 1st of June to mum Sungai
Sadly, due to a deterioration in health of the male baby, Sungai's son is now being hand-reared. If this interception didn't happen, it is unlikely that the baby would've survived. They don't plan to send it to the Orangutan Créche at Monkey World and will be intergrated back into the Krefeld group once old enough much like Afia the Gorilla at Bristol.
