Orangutans in Europe

Zoo Rostock has announced on their Facebook page that Bornean female Hsiao-Ning (Monkey World- Tuan/RoRo) gave birth on Monday to a female infant, fathered by Sabas. At present, she is caring for the infant, which is fantastic news as she herself was hand-reared.

Some old news but Ramat Gan are now down to 2:0 Sumatran Orangutan after 31 year-old female Tussy died of heart failure and 2 weeks later 48 year-old female Rochelle died of a brain haemorrhage. 49-year old male Mushon will remain at Ramat Gan with his son Rachamim who turned 7 yesterday.

Do you know if 'Mushon' is another name for Sumatran male 'Frank' or a different animal?
He has been previously listed as Frank/Moshe but is now listed as just Mushon. He was born at Frankfurt in 1968, moved to Tel Aviv in 1971 and to Ramat Gan in 1981. In total, he has had 13 offspring, of which only 4 are now surviving; Those being Noah (Now at Amneville, 3 surviving off-spring, 2 of which are now breeding), Rona (Now at Lisbon, had 2 offspring only one of which is surviving, the one who died was fathered by Mushon/Frank), Revital (Now at Zurich, has one surviving off-spring still living with her) and Rachamam (Still at Ramat Gan with his father).

It is the same, in Frankfurt where he was born he got the name FRANK.

Thanks, I thought he must be the same animal from his age. I believe he is the ony purebred offspring of his Sumatran father, the imposing male 'Moritz' who was brought to Frankfurt as a fully adult male captured in the wild.

Actually of the 15 offspring fathered by Moritz, 10 of them were pure Sumatrans although only 5 of that 10 reached maturity. The surviving 5 Sumatrans were Carla (No offspring), Salih (Did have one offspring but died at birth and was sired by Moritz), Mushon/Frank (As mentioned above had 13 offspring), Cup (No offspring) and Niko (Had 3 offspring). Of Moritz's 15 offspring the only 2 survivors today are Ferda (Hybrid) at Usti and Mushon/Frank at Ramat Gan. Non of the hybrids sired by Moritz bred into second generations.

Thanks for the breakdown. Moritz was an amazing-looking animal. Saw him several times in Frankfurt. Frank/Mushon has some resemblance to him facially.

Also for what its worth an article on the 2 females deaths explains why Tussy never bred after many matings with Mushon was due to reproductive problems namely problems with her fallopian tube.

There is now a vote for the baby's name, the options are:
Niah meaning the happy one
Wangi meaning fragrance
Sari Naru meaning Luminous star
Pelangi meaning rainbow
Hati meaning heart
The name will be announced on September the 8th which is the 5th anniversary of the Darwineum opening

Padana the Sumatran at Leipzig has had a baby. This is the second born at Leipzig this year.

Sari at Barcelona will soon leave for Dublin Zoo. She is the granddaughter of Dublin's male Sibu. She will bring the number of females able to breed at Dublin to 2 (The other is Mujur).

Odd to send her back to where the breeding male is her own grandfather...

Maybe he's going to be retired? He's nearly 39 and hasn't done much breeding lately. I don't think Dublin has the facilities to keep him separate though.

There's always the old Gorilla enclosure. With a few adjustments would be fine for a lone male orang.

Maybe there is an ownership agreement in place? Ie: Dublin own the first female offspring in return for loan of that male to Barcelona

There isn't an ownership agreement for Sari but there is for her full brother Balu

Batak the male Sumatran has left Leipzig for Tierpark Hagenbeck to replace Tuan (Who is still there, just a non-breeder)

Utara at Furuviksparken has passed away. She was also pregnant. This leaves Furuviksparken with 1:1
