Orangutans in Europe

Not sure if this is interesting for you guys - our Orangs here in Basel will be part of a study of University of Neuchâtel. They want to find out how apes absorb and process information and how they solve problems. They started with the Chimps a while ago and now they started with the Orangs.

Below link shows the official message where Basel Zoo confirms the project. Yes, I know that the rest of the article is about Chimps, sorry about that.

I happened to be in the Apehouse yesterday and got to whitness them react to the screen/the task. (Only one group will be participating, Revital, Vendel and Ketawa). Kila and Bagus in the enclosure next to them showed no interest at all - but Budi in the one next to Kila and Bagus was literally glued to the window and wanted to see what was going on over in the other enclosure. Vendel and Ketawa hesitated and waited in safe distance while Mummy Revital went up to the screen.

The first task was to tap the green square on an otherwise white screen. Once done, there's a couple of pellets falling out on the bottom of the screen. No, they can't get food like this all day long, it's all monitored and just for a limited time per day.

Below is a link to a photo/video of every Orang-utan enclosure in Europe. I've always enjoyed observing through the internet how Orang-utans are kept in zoos through-out Europe. I'm very lucky to have Chester as my local zoo which has one of the best, if not the best Orangutan enclosures in Europe. I will admit I was unable to find a few photos of exhibits (Indoors for the Orangs at Sosto or the indoors at Usti) but I think I have got the majority. I have also tried to include which zoos keep their Orangs in mixed exhibits, my personal favorite being Dortmund's Tapir and Orang mix. As far as I am aware Dudley and Aalborg are both planning to build new enclosures for there Bornean groups with new ones for Wilhelma and possibly Jardin des Plantes in the future.

Sumatran Orangutan born on the 21st of November to Naong X Dunja at Furuviksparken. Both parents first surviving offspring. It is also a first successful breeding for Furuviksparken and first successful breeding of Sumatran Orangutan in Sweden.

Bornean females at Rostock Zoo, Miri and Dinda have both been confirmed as pregnant and due in spring this year. The father of Miri's is older male Ejde whereas Sabas in the father of Dinda's. This will be the first baby for both mothers.

Just giving myself a pat on the back as I diagnosed pregnancy when seeing a photo of Dinda recently :)
 
Satu, a young female Sumatran has moved to Leipzig from Berlin Zoo for a 3 month quarantine before moving to Ramat Gan
 
Nonja at Munster Zoo was PTS yesterday due to an age related hip and leg injury. She was 40 years old at the time of her death. This leaves Munster with 2:4 Bornean Orangutan. Her genes live on with her offspring all breeding (with the exception of Niah who turns 5 in May) into next generations having herself had 4 surviving offspring (Nony at Kristiansand, Batu at Twycross, Mali at Paignton and Niah at Munster).

Sumatran Orangutan born at Tierpark Hellabrunn to Bruno and Jahe although another female called Matra is rearing the baby. This is the forth Orangutan born at Munich since October 2016.

The baby has been confirmed as a female and named 'Indah'
